SUNS CONTINUE THEIR WINNING WAYS AGAINST TAMWORTH

Coffs Harbour Beachside Radiology Suns Women’s State League players responded well to their home ground supporters who cheered and encouraged each play in their game against Tamworth on Saturday at Sportz Central.  Jordon Woods signalled her shots were on, by sinking two 3 pointers in the opening minutes – she was Suns’ top scorer with 14 points.  Jessi  Reeves took to the court half way through the first quarter and needed to re-adjust to Coffs Suns’ plays – which were different from her Hawaiian experiences. Jessi was strong in defence and added power to the Suns’ running game, scoring a valuable 9 points.

Tamworth Thunderbolts picked up their scoring in the 2nd quarter and briefly drew level before Georgia Martyn and Laura Bamford sunk some great shots and Coffs drew ahead to be 30 – 19 at halftime.

For the remainder of the game, the Suns’ defence held its ground against some hard confrontations and Captain Kate Harland and Piper Bourke reasserted their dominance, ably supported by Rachael McGinniskin rebounding and shooting under the basket. The young legs of Jasmine Host, Emily Malouf and Ellie Hewitt saw the Suns pull away in the 4th quarter, outscoring the Thunderbolts 29-7. Final score was 71-41 for Coffs Harbour Suns.

Next weekend, Coffs Suns take on highly ranked Newcastle Hunters at 3pm Saturday and 10am Sunday at Sportz Central. Fans will be guaranteed some outstanding games from last year’s Grand Final opponents.

The following week – 4th July 5pm will be last time that the Suns are playing at home against Maitland – their first game here was a hard fought win for the Suns.
