The AFL Goldfields Under 17 team have made their tour of Far North Queensland a successful one, defeating a combined AFL Townsville-Mackay side by 104 points at Townsville’s Tony Ireland Stadium today.
In contrast to last Sunday’s game against AFL Cairns, the AFL Goldfields team started somewhat slowly as AFL Townsville-Mackay kicked the first goal of the game, before AFL Goldfields kicked five of the next seven goals to lead by 14 points thanks in large part to RDFNL duo Liam Middleton and Bailee Revell, who kicked two goals each in the opening quarter.
AFL Townsville-Mackay kicked the first goal of the second quarter to reduce the margin to eight points, but from there on in the game was a one-way procession as AFL Goldfields kicked eighteen goals to four for the rest of the game to win by 104 points.
Sunbury Lions on-baller Brad Bernacki was a standout with his clearance work, named as the best player on the ground, with Rupertswood’s Bailee Revell not far behind after a six-goal performance. Beaufort’s Joel Chester earned praise from the AFL Townsville-Mackay coaches, with captain-for-the-day Cameron Lovig, Trentham gun Jake Keogh and Ballarat ruckman Mitch Bishop all impressive.
The AFL Goldfields Under 17 returns to Melbourne tomorrow after not losing a game in Far North Queensland to prepare to face AFL Barwon as part of the Kingprint Online Bob Davis Trophy at Hamlyn Park, Geelong, on Sunday 5th July
