AFL Victoria have released details around the AFL Victoria Community Championships for the 2016 season.
To be held on the weekend of 21st/22nd May 2016, AFL Victoria have combined it’s metropolitan and country championship carnivals into the one carnival, with metropolitan leagues set to play against country leagues for the first time in the championship’s structure.
In releasing the 2016 fixture, AFL Victoria Community Football Operations Manager Gerard Ryan labelled the new carnival as one of community football’s most exciting initiatives.
“These championships will provide for the first time a true championship model allowing a league to be recognised as the premier community football league in the state and an opportunity for metropolitan and country leagues to play each other on a regular basis”, Ryan commented.
The top four ranked country leagues after the 2015 Country Championships, which includes the Ballarat FNL, will face off against the top four ranked metropolitan leagues that have confirmed their intent in competing in the carnival, before referring back to a structure consistent with previous country championship carnivals, with the 2016 championships being used as a measure for future rankings.
“In the initial year of the championships, leagues have been fixtured against each other in a manner which will assist in confirming a ranking of leagues for 2017 and beyond”, Ryan mentioned.
“As manager of the Championships, AFL Victoria will take responsibility of rankings for a league”.
AFL Goldfields leagues will be fully involved in the 2016 AFL Victoria Community Championships, with the Ballarat FNL set to take on the Western Region FL at a WRFL venue. The Central Highlands FL are set to host the Geelong & District FNL, the Riddell District FNL will look to avenge their one-point loss to the Alberton FNL in 2013 and the Maryborough Castlemaine District FNL will host the Horsham & District FNL.
