The Melton Toyota Riddell District Football & Netball League, in conjunction with award sponsor Dome Security, are pleased to announce the nominations for the Steve Turner Medal - RDFNL Dome Rising Gun Award for Round 5 of the 2016 RDFNL season.
Steve Turner is a name synonymous with junior football in the north/western metropolitan areas. Steve is a Life Member of the Riddell District FNL who has held many roles within the league, including a stint as Football Operations Manager and on the RDFNL Board. In 2016, Steve once again sits on the RDFNL Board.
Round 5 - Tom Gawthrop - Woodend/Hesket
Tom played his junior football with Woodend. A key position forward with great speed and mobility, Tom played Under 18.5s football for Woodend/Hesket while in the Under 16s in 2012. He made his Senior debut in 2013 and was named in the best in his first game while still playing Under 18.5s football.
Tom played 36 games for the Cannons from 2014 to 2015. He also enjoyed VFL experience.
Tom finished his time with the Cannons at the end of last season and returned home to his beloved Hawks.
He had a break out game in the round five win against the Sunbury Kangaroos with six goals. He kicked multiple goals in eight of 10 games before a hand injury ended his season. He finished the season with 29 goals. His height was not only handy up forward, but he enjoyed stints in the ruck and in the backline.
To be eligible for the Steve Turner Medal, players must be under 23 years of age, and have played less than 15 senior games prior to the start of the 2016 season. Players must have played junior or Under 18.5 football in the RDFNL, and have made themselves available for selection in RDFNL Interleague Programs. Macedon's Jason Cooke won the award last year.
