The Melton Toyota Riddell District Football & Netball League, in conjunction with award sponsor Dome Security, are pleased to announce the nominations for the Steve Turner Medal - RDFNL Dome Rising Gun Award for Round 17 of the 2016 RDFNL season.
Steve Turner is a name synonymous with junior football in the north/western metropolitan areas. Steve is a Life Member of the Riddell District FNL who has held many roles within the league, including a stint as Football Operations Manager and on the RDFNL Board. In 2016, Steve once again sits on the RDFNL Board.
Round 17 - Leigh McMahon - Romsey
If a team needs a player that they can rely on to get their job done each week, Romsey's Leigh McMahon is that player.
Leigh started playing Under 18.5s with Romsey back in 2011 where he doubled up to play in the Reserves on six occasions. He was the first to put his hand up to help out where needed.
He played three stand-out seasons at Under 18.5s level, and in his final year at that grade in 2013, he made his Senior debut and proved to be a handy goal kicker.
Leigh didn't play with the club in 2014 but returned last year to be a valuable asset at Reserves level. His commitment this year warranted an immediate call-up to be a vital player for Romsey at Senior level this year.
He played 13 games, and while he was a noted goal kicker in the past, he worked hard to set them up. He was consistent all season and enjoyed his best performance of the year in the final round of the season as Romsey knocked Lancefield out of the race for a spot in the finals.
To be eligible for the Steve Turner Medal, players must be under 23 years of age, and have played less than 15 senior games prior to the start of the 2016 season. Players must have played junior or Under 18.5 football in the RDFNL, and have made themselves available for selection in RDFNL Interleague Programs. Macedon's Jason Cooke won the award last year.
