The AFL Goldfields Under 17 team have made their tour of Far North Queensland a successful one, defeating a combined AFL Townsville/Mackay side by nine points at Townsville’s Tony Ireland Stadium today.
After a slow start, AFL Goldfields picked up their game in the latter stages of the opening quarter before dominating the second quarter to lead by 25 points at half time.
In the third quarter though, the AFL Townsville/Mackay midfielders started to control the game, and it was only through fantastic conversion in limited forward 50 entries that the visitors led by 16 points at the final break.
Despite conceding the first goal of the quarter, AFL Goldfields seemed in a good place when Ballarat’s Will Garner and Daylesford’s Cam Lovig goaled in pretty quick succession to stretch the lead to 22 points, however AFL Townsville/Mackay hit back with the last two goals of the game before the siren sounded to complete AFL Goldfields’ undefeated tour of Far North Queensland.
Trentham midfielder Callan Wellings was awarded the best on ground medal after the game, with Gisborne Rookies forward Jack Reaper replicating his efforts against AFL Cairns with three goals. Full match details are listed below.
