History repeated itself on Saturday as Riddell District Football Netball League went down to Alberton in another thriller.
The locals led for most of the second half before stumbling in the final few minutes, losing by 12-points at Inverloch/Kongwak Reserve.
The two faced off in 2014 where Alberton tasted a one-point win at Romsey Park. Riddell led at three-quarter-time before being overrun in the final term. A costly 50-metre penalty late in the game made an impact on the result.
Fast track to 2016 and the locals led again at three-quarter-time. Romsey's Chris Burkett was penalised for holding the ball at the 12 minute mark of the final term. A goal from the resulting free-kick put Alberton in front and remained in control for the remainder of the game.
This highly anticipated match had a solid build-up. RDFNL was reduced to 22 men from its squad of 24 on the morning of the match.
It was hot and the ground was big. Rotations would prove vital as the match progressed.
RDFNL started the game in style when Sunbury Kangaroo Tom Ellard kicked a dribbling goal in the opening minute. Kael Bergles replied for the locals from the next centre clearance.
The goals flowed in a frenetic opening term. Lancefield's Jon Kent kicked two goals from set shots and set up Riddell's Haydn Ross for another.
Alberton led by 14-points at the first change, thanks to the impact of Dylan Clarke. He kicked a goal from outside 50 on the run to create a vital lead.
