The Melton Toyota Riddell District Football & Netball League, in conjunction with award sponsor Dome Security, are pleased to announce the nominations for the Steve Turner Medal - RDFNL Dome Rising Gun Award for Rounds 7 through 12 of the 2015 RDFNL season.
Steve Turner is a name synonymous with junior football in the north/western metropolitan areas. Steve is a Life Member of the Riddell District FNL who has held many roles within the league, including a stint as Football Operations Manager and on the RDFNL Board. In 2015, Steve once again sits on the RDFNL Board as well as taking up a team manager's role with the Western Jets in the TAC Cup.
The nominations for Rounds 7-12 of the Steve Turner Medal are...
Round 7 – Liam Berry (Rupertswood). Berry made his return to the Rupertswood senior side against Riddell in Round 7 after an eighteen-month absence from senior football at the Sharks, having spent most of 2014 in the Calder Cannons system. Berry made an immediate impact, being named amongst Rupertswood’s better players in their win against the Bombers and has been dynamic with eight goals in Rupertswood’s last four games, including five goals in a best on ground performance against Kilmore in Round 10.
Round 8 – Nathan Tessari (Romsey). After making a single senior appearance in Romsey’s premiership year last year, Tessari has been almost a permanent fixture in the Redbacks’ line-up in 2015. Tessari has been named amongst Romsey’s best players five times this year, including the Redbacks’ Round 8 win over Melton Centrals, and was named as Romsey’s best player in their Round 11 win over Lancefield.
Round 9 – Matthew Bulluss (Broadford). After making an impressive senior debut with six appearances in 2014, Bulluss has played in every game for the Roos in 2015, as well as representing the RDFNL at Under 19 level in the Worksafe AFL Victoria Country Championships. A lifelong Roo, Bulluss was at his best in Broadford’s narrow Round 9 loss to Rupertswood, booting two goals and being named as the Roos’ second best player.
Round 10 – Matthew Panuccio (Riddell). After a decorated junior career, Panuccio is starting to make a name for himself at Senior level for Riddell. One of the best players in the RDFNL’s Under 19 loss to the Nepean FNL in the Worksafe AFL Victoria Country Championships, Panuccio has had a real impact in his five games at senior level in 2015, being named amongst the Bombers’ best in each game since Round 8 – with no small coincidence that Riddell have won each of the five Senior games Panuccio has played in.
Round 11 – Austin Cicero (Rupertswood). Having played every game in Rupertswood’s senior line-up in 2015, Cicero is another talented youngster Ben Jordan has given a chance in 2015. Cicero played nine games in 2014 and was another to represent the RDFNL in the Under 19 interleague team this year, but his eye-catching performance in the Sharks’ Round 11 win over Macedon shows that Cicero has a bright future ahead of him at senior level.
Round 12 – Jason Cooke (Macedon). Cooke is enjoying his first year at Tony Clarke Reserve this year, having been named as Macedon’s best player on four occasions, including their Round 12 victory over Woodend-Hesket, and booted five goals against Macedon back in Round 8. After a prolific junior career in front of goals at the Sunbury Lions and time spent in the Calder Cannons system, Cooke played two senior VFL games with Coburg in 2013 and spent 2014 with Pascoe Vale in the Essendon District FL before helping Macedon rise back up the ladder and into finals contention in 2015.
To be eligible for the Steve Turner Medal, players must be under 23 years of age, and have played less that 15 senior games prior to the start of the 2015 season. Players must have played junior or Under 18.5 football in the RDFNL, and have made themselves available for selection in RDFNL Interleague Programs. The 2014 Steve Turner Medal - RDFNL Dome Rising Gun Award was won by Jordan Baumgartner from Rockbank.
