The Riddell District Football League home and away season reached a climax on Saturday. Romsey full-forward Matt Davidson kicked his 100th goal of the season in the second quarter against Rockbank at the Ian Cowie Reserve.
Macedon held off a fast-finishing Melton Centrals outfit to win by four points; Lancefield led all day against Wallan and was overrun in the last term to go down by six points. Diggers Rest's Col Laurie missed a shot after the siren that enabled the Sunbury Kangaroos to hold bragging rights heading into this week's qualifying final; Kilmore finished the season in a blaze of glory with a seven-goal win over Broadford; while Riddell led by as much as 87 points in the third term before winning by 53 points against Woodend/Hesket at the Kyneton Showgrounds.
Macedon heads into the finals on a six-game winning streak after defeating the Centrals at McPherson Park. The Cats led by 34 points midway through the second term thanks to the hardness of Jason Davies and Clint Burgess across half-back before Centrals onballer Chris Kellett led his team back into the game. They kicked five of the last six goals of the game thanks to three from Adam Fenton but it wasn't enough in a frenetic finish. Riddell started off its clash against the Hawks in a blaze of glory. Jarryd Silvester kicked four goals in the opening term as the Bombers couldn't miss, leading by 37 points at the break. Haydn Ross had a purple patch where he kicked three goals in three minutes midway through the second term to extend the lead to 70 points at half-time. The Hawks' young brigade in Matt Quinn, Alex Shipard and Josh Crook were encouraging all day while Nick Ash and Dan Sahlberg were full of running across half-back as the Hawks won the second half.
Phil Conway was at his brilliant best as he nearly led Lancefield to a memorable win against Wallan. Explosive young star Phil Shaw kicked two goals as the young Tigers balttled hard against the strong Pies, who were well led by Jamie Ormerod, Tod Muldoon and Glenn Poorter.
Matt Davidson kicked five for the Redbacks in their 37-point win over Rockbank. Brad Mitchell and Danny Harrison were stand-outs while Jamie Zerafa finished with three goals and Russell Rich was a star for Rockbank. Kilmore dominated Broadford after quarter-time to win comfortably by 42 points. Scott Swindells, Scott Heather, Alex Desmond and Travis Hede kicked three for the winners while Grant Wearne kicked four for Broadford and was well-supported by Dan Freeman.
