AFL Tasmania Chairman, Dominic Baker, today congratulated the Tasmanian Government, and in particular Premier, Lara Giddings, for having the vision to invest in the ongoing development of Blundstone Arena.
“Today’s announcement by the Premier is obviously a boost for the sport loving public of Tasmania, particularly Cricket and AFL football fans; however, the Government investment will also stimulate opportunities for the building industry and provide jobs for Tasmanian’s during the development phase,” Baker said.
“This means Tasmania will now have two legitimate AFL standard venues which can only be an extremely positive outcome for our Tasmanian State League competition and our aspiration to attract additional AFL content into Tasmania.”
“AFL Tasmania strongly supports AFL games at Aurora stadium whilst being totally committed to the notion of AFL football being played at both ends of the island. This can only be sustained by our State presenting the AFL with stadiums that can cater for the needs of our growing national competition and importantly AFL clubs and their fans.”
“AFL Tasmania aims to further grow the number of AFL games played in Tasmania over the next decade, in an endeavour for our State to become a legitimate market for an AFL club to prosper,” Baker said.
“Finally, we congratulate our friends at Cricket Tasmania and the Clarence City Council for endorsing the development plans. AFL Tasmania looks forward to building on the already strong relationship that our two sports share in Tasmania, and cricket and football continuing to work together in all regions of Tasmania can only be a good thing for our community.”
