AFL Tasmania today announced, with the support of Australian Football ICON Ron Barassi, that a Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame will be established and positioned at Aurora Stadium in Launceston.
The Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame is being established by AFL Tasmania to ensure that the history, tradition and culture of Tasmanian Football is appropriately promoted and preserved.
The Tasmanian Hall of Fame will recognise and enshrine the players, coaches, umpires, administrators/volunteers and media representatives who have made a most significant contribution to the game of Australian Football since its inception.
In addition to recognising and enshrining individuals in the above mentioned categories, AFL Tasmania will also recognise and enshrine the following:
* The most memorable
GAMES played in Tasmania (minimum one game per year)
* The legendary
TEAMS from Tasmania (minimum one team per year)
* The great Tasmanian football
CLUBS (minimum one club per year)
The two main elements of the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame will be:
1. The positioning of the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame at Aurora Stadium
2. An annual gala induction function at Wrest Point
AFL Tasmania General Manager, Scott Wade, advised that redevelopment of Aurora Stadium by the Tasmanian Government and the Launceston City Council has clearly positioned Aurora Stadium as the home of Australian Football in Tasmania and thus making it the most appropriate venue to promote and preserve the history, tradition and culture of Tasmanian Football.
AFL Tasmania and the Launceston City Council are currently working together in respect to the actual design, presentation and promotion of the Tasmanian Football Hall at Aurora Stadium. The final plan is expected to be ready to be presented within the next three months.
The inaugural Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame Function will be held at Wrest Point on Friday July 15th 2005.
Scott Wade advised that it is AFL Tasmania's intention to develop the Hall of Fame function into `the football event of the year'; a function that all Tasmanian football followers should not miss.
In supporting the announcement of the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame, AFL Legend and Australian Football icon Ron Barassi, said:
"I congratulate AFL Tasmania on their initiative in establishing a Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame."
"Tasmania has and continues to produce players capable of playing at the highest level; many of them are true champions of our great game. It is important that all states and territories recognise the great people that help make our game part of the nations culture and heritage."
"It is particularly import for a state such as Tasmania, that to date isn't a true part of the national competition, to effectively promote its contribution to the game on a national scale. Projects such as the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame help promote Tasmanian Football to the AFL and the rest of the nation."
