AFL Tasmania successfully conducted the first gala induction function of the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame at Wrest Point Casino in Hobart tonight with the highlight of the evening being the announcement of the first three `Icons' of Tasmanian football.
Early Tasmanian and Cananore rover, Horrie Gorringe, the great Tasmanian and St.Kilda leader Darrel `The Doc' Baldock, and arguably the greatest Australian Rules football goalkicker of all time, Peter Hudson, were named as the first `Icons' of Tasmanian football.
A further feature of the evening was the announcement of the first fifteen `Legends' to be inducted into the Football Hall of Fame that will be situated at Aurora Stadium in Launceston. The fifteen legends included the three Icons, Gorringe, Baldock and Hudson, and other legendary Tasmanian football contributors at home and on the national scene, including:
Players - Gorringe, Baldock and Hudson and Ian Stewart, Royce Hart, John Leedham, Geoff Long and Rodney Eade.
Coaches - Bruce Carter, Roy Cazaly, Paddy Martin and Jack Rough.
Umpire - Jack McMurray Junior.
Administrator - Ian Drake.
Media - Tim Lane.
As well as the announcement of the Icons and Legends the gala function, which was attended by 700 football luminaries and supporters of the game, recognised the following for induction:
The first Memorable Game - The Tasmania v Victoria game of 1960.
The first Legendary Team - Scottsdale's team of 1973.
The first Great Club - North Hobart Football Club.
Hall of Fame Inductees - No.1 (Fred McGinis) through to No. 130 (Matthew Richardson).
