AFL Tasmania and its private health insurer sponsor MBF have combined to raise awareness of the issue to encourage young people to deal with the dangerous combination of inexperience and risk taking behaviour.
The young driver road safety message has been conveyed in a number of activities including joint MBF-AFL Tasmania forums conducted in Hobart and Devonport titled, "Keeping our young people from the road to tragedy."
In addition, the MBF HighMarks program conducted in conjunction with the Tassie Devils, in which 10 teenagers from regional areas spent four days with the team, included a young driver safety component.
Road accident statistics demonstrate the importance of the issue. Nearly a third of the more than 800 deaths that have occurred on Tasmanian roads since 1989 involved young people aged 16 to 25.
