The President of the North Hobart Football Club (NHFC) - GUNNS North Hobart Demons, Mr John Leedham announced today that students from the Campbell Street Primary School had accepted an invitation to visit the club on Monday (22 May 2006). The students will visit the club between 12 noon and 2.00 pm.
Mr Leedham said that as season 2006 marks the 125th anniversary of the founding of the North Hobart Football Club on the 12th May 1881, the club were particularly pleased to host the students.
The Campbell Street Primary School had played an important part in the history of the Club. The NHFC was formed as the result of men from businesses in the area including Smiths Dairy, Chestermans Timber Mill, Copplemans Woodyard and Cleary's Gates Quarry playing 12 a side pick up matches in Smith's dairy paddock at the domain end of Campbell Street. This area is near where the Campbell Street Primary School was established in later years.
Due to the support and success of these games, a formal meeting was held on the 12 May 1881 at St Kilda House, Macquarie Street, Hobart to form a club to be named the North Hobart Football Club.
In addition North Hobart Football Club premiership players including Darrell Eaton (1947 and 1957 premiership teams) and John Marshall (1969 premiership), club Hall of Fame inductee Warren Brewer and 1964 captain Colin Moore began their football careers at the school. Darrell Eaton has also been inducted into the NHFC Hall of Fame.
The visit to the club by the students of the Campbell Street Primary School is part of Community Studies in the Essential Learning's Curriculum. The students are to complete a Community Studies project on the history and relationship of the school with the NHFC and other organisation in the area.
Mr Leedham said that the club has a number of historical memorabilia items, including photographs of each of the club's twenty eight (28) premiership teams, displayed in the NHFC Clubrooms.
Mr Leedham thanked the principal of the Campbell Street Primary School, Mr David Bain, for his support of the visit to the club.
