Tasmanian Devil player, and `Face' of Aurora Footy in Schools, Justin Plapp and All Australian youth player Tom Bellchambers, opened the 2006 Aurora Primary School `Country Gold' Carnival at Aurora Stadium.
Justin has been involved in the delivery of the Aurora `Footy in Schools' Program, with the assistance of the Development team at AFL Tasmania throughout Tasmania, which will see over 10,000 students participating in the Program from Grades 3 to 6.
Tom Bellchambers was part of the AIS U17 Academy and All Australian Team to Play Ireland in the international Rules earlier this year. Both will be passing on tips and searching for young talent at the Aurora Country Gold Carnival.
Aurora's continued support of young footballers in Tasmanian primary schools is building on a long tradition of providing primary school football programs to enhance participation and a first step in the football talent pathway.
Features of the Primary School Football Carnival program for 2006 are:
Statewide a total of 600 players are expected to participate representing all corners of Tasmania.
The Carnivals are conducted over 1 or 2 days in `round robin' format to maximise participation at a higher level of play.
Regional carnivals to be undertaken in the North, North-west and South at the best available venues, including Aurora Stadium.
Schools provided with considerable assistance to travel to Championship games.
Tasmanian Devils and Tassie Mariners players will participate in the conduct of the Carnivals.
The Carnivals will be conducted with the support of AFL Tasmania and Aurora under the Footy in Schools banner.
`Face' of Aurora Footy in Schools, Justin Plapp said of the Regional Carnivals:
The Aurora Regional Primary School Carnivals provides the chance for primary school footballers from throughout Tasmania to compete against their peers and brings together the best performed young developing talented players. They epitomise what school sport should be about: giving students the opportunity to have fun, develop skills and being members of a team.
Aurora corporate affairs manager Adrian Wild said:
The Footy in Schools program has been introducing young Tasmanians to football for many years. We are very happy to be involved with football in schools by supporting these Carnivals, where players take a first step to demonstrating their enhanced skills and teamwork. The Carnivals will continue to be a resounding success if young people are inspired to be active and become more involved in sports such as AFL.
Full details of the upcoming Aurora Regional Primary School Carnivals are attached. The North-west Carnival was successfully conducted in mid July.
