Former Tasmanian and Glenorchy ruckman John Kingston today received back his only state Guernsey after 40 years.
Retired South Australian football star Ken Eustice, who captained his state and won the SANFL best and fairest Magarey Medal, returned the Guernsey after he received it 40 years ago following the final game of the 1966 Australian National Football Carnival between Tasmania and South Australia.
In the tradition of the day guernseys were swapped at the conclusion of the carnival which was held in Hobart. Recently Ken Eustice contacted AFL Tasmania with the assistance of another South Australian football legend in Peter Carey. Ken only knew that he had exchanged his Guernsey with a No.2 of Tasmania. This has been identified as ex-Glenorchy ruckman John Kingston.
With the assistance of AFL Tasmania and another South Australian football legend in Peter Carey, John Kingston has been located and will receive back his only state guernsey after 40 years.
The guernsey and a copy of Peter Cornwall's book "Pound For Pound", an assisted biography of Ken Eustice, was presented by Peter Carey on behalf of Ken Eustice.
Full details of the 1966 Carnival and the career of Ken Eustice is attached and are provided courtesy of FullPoints Footy.
The Hobart Carnival of 1966 saw Tasmania conduct arguably the most successful Carnival to that time. As well, although the Tasmanian team did not achieve much success the performance of individual Tasmanian players was a highlight of the Carnival with an all-time high of 4 being selected All Australian. These included Peter Hudson (New Norfolk), Graeme Lee (Launceston) and representing Victoria Darrel Baldock and Ian Stewart (both St.Kilda).
