It has tested the limits of endurance, but the exposure to senior footy for many Colts players in tonight's semi-finals means quality football will be on show. The new under17.5 competition has provided some long weekends for many competitiors, who have backed up to play seniors or reserve at their respective clubs.
But all focus will be on tonight's semi-finals as Manunda and first-year side Cape York House Eagles vie for direct entry to the decider and Port Douglas and Centrals Trinity Beach play to stay alive.
Regular senior players Glendon Woosup (Eagles), Ethan McCullogh, Brett McKeown, Ashley Davidson (Port), Josh Barnett, Aidan Dipietro and Elia Ware (Hawks) will all be in action for their clubs. AFL Cairns juniors coordinator Sean Hunter praised the coaches for increasing the professionalism of the competition.
"They've upped the ante; teams play with structure and plans in place and the skill level and physicality of these boys is always impressive," he said.
Port play Centrals at 6pm tonight, followed by Hawks and Eagles at 7.15pm.
