Last Monday night saw over 400 people pack into the Allen Aylett Function Room at Cazalys Social Club to be a part of AFL Cairns Juniors Night of Nights.
AFLCJ Presentation Night was a chance to recognise the season just gone. We presented all of our Cairns Lions Representative Sides (U14/16/17) including Peninsula Sport Representative (U12/15/Youth Girls) and acknowledged this weekend’s Grand Final Sides (U13/15/COLTS/Youth Girls). We presented contribution to Football Awards to our volunteers as well as recognizing Coaches of the Year (Non-Competitive/Youth), Individual Best & Fairest Awards (U13/15/COLTS/Youth Girls) and showed our appreciation to our Sponsors for Season 2015. These awards are based on Individual Performances throughout Season 2015 as well as Club Nominations and League Recognition.
The evening started with AFL Cape York players performing a culture dance. This performance gave all patrons an insight into these players culture and traditions. A brilliant spectacle!
The night also was a chance to acknowledge the hard work of our club volunteers, with Pyramid Power’s Jim and Marie Floyd being awarded Volunteers of the Year for 2015. It is the first time this award has been shared. Jim & Marie are passionate, enthusiastic, driven and would do anything for the kids. Both Jim & Marie lead by example and gets things done with a positive attitude. They encourages new parents to get in and get involved and they do this by their friendly, motivating and helpful approach. Jim & Marie are very worthy recipients of this year’s 2015 Volunteer of the Year Award.
Another worthy recipient on the night was Cairns City Lions Under 9’s Coach, Shane Miller who was awarded the Non-Competitive Coach of the Year for 2015 with Cairns Hawks’ Campbell Addison awarded the Youth Coach of the Year in Season 2015 for his work with his Cairns Hawks Gold U13’s.
Presentation night also acknowledges AFL Cairns Juniors Representative Players by presenting the Presidents Medal to the best performer on that trip. This player must also show leadership on and off the field. The winners were; Michael Selsby - Centrals TB (U14’s), Jacob Heron – Cairns Saints - (U16’s) and Jack Dickson – Port Douglas (U17’s).
Lachlan Smith from Cairns City Lions and Pyramid Power’s Danny Floyd were awarded the FNQ Greenskeeping Youth Players of the Year in season 2015. The Youth Player of the Year is a player who is recognised for their overall contribution to football on & off field. We look at a players commitment to the league and their club. Both young man give so much to footy in Cairns and thoroughly deserved this award.
Late 2014, AFLCJ Clubs voted to present a leading goal kicking award for our premier competition, the Colts. Pyramid Power’s Danny Floyd won the inaugural golden boot finishing the season with 39 goals.
Manunda Hawks’ Niall Gee was the recipient of the McDonalds Player/Umpire Award for 2015 with this player excelling in both fields. Niall represented the U16 Cairns Lions this year at the QLD Country Championships and was involved in the U17 Lions squads. He is also a valuable member to the Manunda Hawks COLTS side. In 2015, Niall umpired matches from U11’s through to U15’s and is a Senior Boundary Umpire.
The night also paid recognition to all competing Grand Finals Sides who will play in Sundays fixtures. All competing teams were presented to and acknowledged by the crowd for their seasons efforts thus far.
In 2015, AFLCJ introduced a competitive 4 team Youth Girls Competition which on Monday night saw their inaugural vote count held and best and fairest presented. It was fantastic for the girls to be a part of the leagues night of nights and we strongly believe this competition will continue to grow in the years to come.
