Last Monday night saw over 400 people pack into the Allen Aylett Function Room at Cazalys Social Club to be a part of AFL Cairns Juniors Night of Nights.
AFLCJ Presentation Night is a chance to recognise the season just gone. We will present all of our Cairns Lions Representative Sides (U14/16/17) including Peninsula Sport Representative (U12/15), Acknowledge the U11 Shield Winners, Grand Final Sides (U13/15/COLTS), Contribution to Football Awards, Coaches of the Year (Auskick/Youth), Individual Best & Fairest Awards (U13/15/COLTS) and acknowledge our Sponsors for Season 2014. These awards are based on Individual Performances throughout Season 2014, Club Nominations and League Recognition.
The night also was a chance to acknowledge the hard work of our club volunteers, with Centrals Trinity Beaches’ Leanne Kear awarded Volunteer of the Year for 2014. Leanne is passionate, enthusiastic, driven and would do anything for the kids. Leanne leads by example and gets things done with a positive attitude. She encourages new parents to get in and get involved and she does this by her friendly, motivating and helpful approach. Leanne was a very worthy recipient of this year’s 2014 Volunteer of the Year Award.
Another worthy recipient on the night was Port Douglas’s Under 8 Coach, Mathew Scott who was awarded the Auskick Rules Coach of the Year for 2014 with Cairns Hawks’ Adam Davies awarded the Youth Coach of the Year in Season 2014 for his work with his Grand Final side, Cairns Hawks U13’s.
Presentation night also acknowledges AFL Cairns Juniors Representative Players by presenting the Presidents Medal to the best performer on that trip. This player must also show leadership on and off the field. The winners were; Max Culpitt - Centrals TB (U14’s), Jack Bowes – Cairns Saints - (U16’s) and Glendon Woosup – AFLCY Eagles (U17’s).
Daniel Smith from Centrals Trinity Beach was awarded the FNQ Greenskeeping Youth Player of the Year in season 2014. The Youth Player of the Year is a player who is recognised for their overall contribution to football on & off field. We look at a players commitment to the league and their club.
Centrals Trinity Beaches’, Sam Davey was the recipient of the McDonalds Player/Umpire Award for 2014 with this player excelling in both fields. Sam represented the U17 Cairns Lions this year against AFL Goldfields and was named in Cairns Bests. He is also a valuable member to the Centrals TB COLTS side. Sam also umpired matches from U11’s right through to Reserve Grade Football in 2014 as a field umpire.
The night also paid recognition to all competing Grand Finals Sides who will play in Sundays fixtures. AFLCJ acknowledged and presented the i11’s Sportscene Premiers Shield to Cairns Hawks Brown for finishing in 1st place at the conclusion of the Home & Away Season. We also made special mentioned to AFLCJ inaugural Youth Girls Competition who has 109 Registered Players from North Cairns, Pyramid Power, Cairns City Lions and Manunda Hawks that played in the 13 Round Competition. In 2015, we want all clubs to filed a Youth Girls side.
