Kelly did his best to play and also survey his new look squad during wins against North Cairns and Centrals Trinity Beach.
He said Easther was impressive as centre half forward, while returning captain Jesse Dixon and new trio Tom Bartlett (Manunda), Lee Stewart (NTFL) and Jordan Roberts (WAFL) played well.
"Matt was really good and worked really hard, but it was no surprise to me because hes been training really well" Kelly said. "I was happy with how went and the good thing is we get another good hit-out as similar to the normal season as can be".
"Well name the team on Thursday night and prepare just like normal and get a good fell for the season".
Saints beat what was essentially a North Cairns seconds team before an intense hit-out with Centrals ended in a two goal victory. They will play Cairns City Lions, who were impressive in beating South Cairns and a loss by one point to defending champs Port Douglas.
Kelly said he understood North Cairns' decision to play a weaker side against them and admitted he will go into Saturday's final no knowing what the Lions will bring to the table.
"That sort of experimentation is what preseason is all about, we tried to rest a couple as well and it was North's first real go, so they needed opportunity," Kelly said. "I didnt get a chance to watch Lions, but they obviously played well to qualify as we are looking forward to playing at that next level of intensity. "We might be missing a few blokes but we will be picking a strong side".
The final will be played at 3pm at Cazalys this Saturday 28th March.
