Bendigo Bank Cairns Lions U14's were crowned North Queensland Country Champions following the weekends U14 Championships in Airlie Beach. The Bendigo Bank Cairns Lions competed against other NQ country regions for the title; Cape York, Townsville, Mackay and Capricornia.
The Bendigo Bank Cairns Lions throughout the carnival were highly skilful and worked well as a team. Lions coach, Luke Webb believes this weekend was a valuable development experience for Cairns players and this opportunity will hold players in good stead for the coming years. Webb also said “this representative program continues to support the talent of the Cairns region and it provides them with the best opportunity to test themselves against the other North Queensland regions.”
AFL Cairns Operations Manager, Sean Hunter was delighted to receive the news of being crowned North Queensland Country Champions. “As a region, we strive for success and over the weekend it proved to FNQ that our approach, professionalism and commitment to the representative program has payed off. To come away with four comprehensive wins was a brilliant result for everyone involved and thoroughly deserving of their achievement.”
Hunter believes the trip also provided a unique opportunity to expose the young group to the professional environment of AFL football. "The holistic development on and off the field gives the players a taste of what high level football is all about."
