The Bulldogs 14.9 (93) to 11.13 (79) win puts a three win gap between the sides and makes a finals berth for the Lions far less likely. With both games against South Cairns and Cairns Saints in the next two weeks, the Bulldogs are now in a position to show the rest of the competition how legitimate they are. "It was a really important game in the context of the ladder," Mitchell said. "It makes it pretty difficult for Lions now and keeps us close to the top three. We really needed that win and now we've got a chance to prove ourselves."
Centrals welcomed Joel Child back into the playing ranks a little earlier than expected from and ankle injury. He booted three goals in windy conditions as the Dogs built a 30 point lead at three quarter time. Four Lions goals in the fourth sent a few tremors among the Dogs but they could not drag back the margin. "They came at us pretty hard and I though we improved on our performances in previous weeks and really kicked well and hit our targets considering the conditions," Mitchell said.
South Cairns had no problems easing past North Cairns at Fretwell Park, with James Dixon booting eight goals in the 19.13 (127) to 3.6 (24) victory.
