The Cutters were never headed at Holloways Beach, sharing the goals around behind Paul Smith's bag of five to win 15.16 (106) to 8.6 (54).
The on-baller was named best in the league in his Cairns debut last year with the Cutters easily the best side in the regular season before missing the final altogether. Ewer tossed the coin at grand final day instead and says he wants to avoid a repeat of that at all costs this season.
"I don't want to be doing that again," he said.
"I feel like, with Nick Jensen and James Dixon in this year, we have a great spine and it's up to us to find that finals mentality and take it through to the end of the season.
"I don't think we ever had that last year and it probably wasn't much of a surprise (when beaten in back-to-back semi-finals). "
All clubs will have a week off on Saturday before a meeting with Cairns Saints that could decide who takes second spot into finals.
"We want that second place. I don't want to be content with coming third and just putting the queue in the rack and waiting to play Trinity Beach in the knockout semi," Ewer said.
"On paper I think we are good enough (to win a flag) but right now Port are clearly the best side, driving down here every second weekend and beating us all on our home tracks."
