YEPPOON VS BITS
The top of the table clash didn't disappoint with a tight contest all day down at a windy Swan Park. BITS went into the main break holding only a slender 7 point lead, but during the premiership quarter they stamped their authority. BITS kicked 4 goals to 2 in the 3rd and went into the last holding a 4 goal lead.
Yeppoon would have still fancied their chances given they have been running matches out well, but the 4 goal lead against a good side proved to be too much. BITS held on for a comfortable win and would have been relieved that inaccurate kicking didn't cost them the game. BITS kicked a staggering 19 behinds which is only 2 less than the number of total scoring shots the Swans had.
To the Swans credit they were able to apply constant pressure and gave no room for John Beirouti and Adam Rakip to move. The 2 pronged attack finished with their lowest output in a game so far this year but BITS showed that it will take more than stopping their gun forwards to beat them this year.
Top performers for the game were Swans Dan Watkin, Matt Wallin and Lee Millway, for BITS Scott Muller, Daniel Boase and Nick Stanley.
Prediction: BITS by 27 points
Result: BITS by 16 points
GLADSTONE VS BROTHERS
Gladstone jumped out of the blocks jumping to a 2 goal lead by quarter time. The 2nd quarter Gladstone's young stars ran riot kicking 7 goals to 1 to open up a 53 point lead at the main break. If it hadn't been for Brothers backline the lead could have been a lot more.
A 9 goal lead at half-time would generally result in a thumping, but this wasn't to be the case. Brothers started to run through the middle, win the contested football and slowly the momentum of the game was turning. By 3/4 time the Roos was able to peg the margin back by a couple of goals but Gladstone still held a comfortable 44 points.
Brothers stepped up their play to another level in the last, dominating all over the ground and starting to apply scoreboard pressure. The home side were starting to show signs of nerves and Brothers kept coming hard. Brothers drew within a couple of kicks late in the game, but the sound of the siren gave relief to the Mudcrab faithful. The Mudcrabs were kept to just 2 points in the last while Brothers slammed home 5 goals and would be relieved with holding onto the win but would be disappointed again to have not applied a 4 quarter effort.
Top players for the home side included Andy Travis, Ricky Windridge and Joe Navatu, while for Brothers David Scott, Wayne Clifford and Tom Granleese were solid.
Prediction: Brothers by 3 points
Result: Gladstone by 15 points
PANTHERS VS GLENMORE
Glenmore hit the ground running kicking 9 goals to 1 in the 1st quarter and a thrashing was on the cards. Panthers were able to slow the bleeding during the 2nd but were still down by 11 goals going into the main break.
After the break Glenmore found it a lot more difficult to score as Panthers started to find the middle of the big sticks themselves. Panthers dominated the 3rd quarter kicking 5 goals to 1 and one positive they will take out of the game is that they actually managed to outscore the opposition by a couple of points after half time. Glenmore did have the yips in front of goal again so perhaps the scoreboard didn't truely reflect their dominance.
Brandon Chadwick and Cameron Imrie finished with 4 goals each while Daniel Mills was the only multiple goal kicker for the Panthers with 2 goals. Others that had plenty of the ball included Liam Kronk and Matt Ryan for Panthers, and Dylan Hooper and Toby Payne for Glenmore.
Prediction: Glenmore by 21 points
Result: Glenmore by 60 points
Glenmore's Tyson Payne breaks away from the contest.
