Big Year Ahead for McAughtry

Diamond Valley’s Technical Director of Coaching Al McAughtry is in for a very busy 2015. With more Junior Eagles teams likely to be entered into the VJBL competition, Al will have more coaches to work with, ensuring they are doing their best to develop our junior players.

Recently appointed to the Head Coaching position of Diamond Valley’s Senior Championship Men’s Team, no doubt the pressure is on for a finals birth in the upcoming season. Looking to keep the playing list similar to how it appeared in 2014, there’s likely to only be one or two new additions.

Al’s Senior Men’s Coaching appointment came fresh on the heels of him landing the Under 20 Victorian Women’s Head Coaching position. There are always high expectations placed on Victorian Teams going to National Championships and this will be no exception. The team will once again consist of high caliber athletes with a sporadic lead in to the tournament, much of the work here will be done away from the practice courts.

Possibly his biggest challenge for the year ahead comes with his role as Head Coach of the Diamond Valley Under 12 Girls group. The 2014 Under 12 Girls just missed in last Friday night’s Championship Grand Final but put up a fantastic effort. All at the club would love to see next year’s team go one step better. The campaign for the Diamond Valley Under 12 Girls kicked off this week with the first day of their Under 12 Girls Selection Camp.

“The remainder of 2014 and then going into the 2015 season is going to be massive for the club. We hope to complete a thorough and comprehensive selection process prior to taking to the court for qualifying. Al will play a major part in this and will clearly take a more hands on role due to the very important appointments of Head Coaching our Under 12 Girls and Senior Champ Men’s Teams. He is an excellent coach and possesses the capability to cover concentrated development, whilst managing and strategizing with his coaching from one day to the next.” Ross Wignell, CEO Diamond Valley.
