U14 Girls Cap Off Terrific 2017 Season

The under 14/1 girls have just capped off a terrific 2017 season. After their success at the beginning of the season winning the Eltham Dandenong Australia Day tournament, the girls placed 5th at the National Junior Classic. The girls placed in the top 4 in the Victorian Championship division losing in the Preliminary final by 7 points. They then competed at the 2017 Australian U14 Club Championships at Dandenong Basketball Stadium. The girls had a fantastic week competing at the highest level against teams from across the country.

The team made the most of the week aiming to make it an experience the girls would never forget. During the pool phase of the tournament the girls only lost one game to Nunawading. This set them up to play against the hosting Dandenong Rangers in the quarter finals, it was a highly contested game with the girls only just falling short of winning.

With a quick turnaround our girls then won their next game to advance to the 5th & 6th place final against the Nunawading Spectres. It was a great opportunity for our girls to redeem themselves against a team that beat them earlier in the tournament. With this on their mind the girls came away with a fantastic win claiming 5th place in the highly regarded national tournament.

To finish off a stellar season the girls were than awarded the State Local Leader Junior Sports Star Team award. The award is given to a team competing that is 18 years or under and has exhibited the greatest achievement, dedication, fairness and sportsmanship. Nominees in this category must be competing at state level or above. A winning team is awarded for each participating state and we have now been nominated into the national winner group for this category. Coaches Jacqui O’Neill and Gel Coter accepted the award on behalf of the team.

“It was wonderful to see the girls recognised as a team. They are a wonderful bunch of girls and a pleasure to coach. The girls were nominated for their respect and fairness of play and I believe it shows they are not only great players but a wonderful group of friends and teammates. “

-          Head Coach Jacqui O’Neill

Diamond Valley Basketball is incredibly proud of the girls for representing the DVBA, their families and themselves so well and we congratulate the team for a fantastic year.
