NBL1 Eagles Round 1 Review

Diamond Valley v.s Eltham Wildcats (Women)

The Wildcats closed out a narrow 82-78 win over the Eagles in a tense affair at the DV Sports & Fitness Centre.

Chelsea Brook (20 points, 11 rebounds), Vanessa Panousis (22 points, three rebounds, five assists) and Chelsie Schweers (29 points, six threes) all came up big for the visitors. Anneli Maley gobbled up a huge double-double for Diamond Valley, finishing with 27 points and 19 rebounds.

You couldn't separate these teams in the first quarter, trading buckets as Eltham nudged ahead 19-17 at the end of the period. Hope Terdich and Maley helped the Eagles run over the top of the Wildcats in the second quarter, combing for 36 first-half points to push the home team to a 41-36 advantage at the main break.

Neither side could seize control in the third quarter despite Panousis heating up for the Wildcats. The visitors went ahead by two points at the end of three, while Terdich's 23 points led all scorers.

A pulsating fourth quarter had fans on the edge of their seats as Kayla Bretherton's free-throw cut Eltham's lead back to 71-69 with 2:40 on the clock. The Eagles would not go away down the stretch, burying back-to-back jumpers and sending Eltham to the charity swipe. But Eltham made their free throws to hold on in a close one.
