AS SOME sporting codes struggle to gain traction in representative games the Wide Bay AFL showed the was momentum at a higher level in the region with a 15.13 (103) to 7.19 (61) win over Darling Downs at the weekend.
The smaller men from Bay Power, Across The Waves, Brothers and Hervey Bay combined well as a team and used their superior running and ball movement to overpower the bigger Darling Downs players.
Playing with plenty of pride in the yellow and black jersey of the Tigers there was little doubt in the result after half time when Wide Bay kicked clear with nine goals to four after the main break.
Wide Bay AFL president Mark Mason described the game as “hard, fast and fair”, and while there were plenty of outstanding players for the Tigers, Bay Power’s Damon Oakley took out the MVP award.
Oakley missed the opening quarter but once he was on the ground was a key part in his team’s ability to run the ball while negating the opposition’s possession-style football using bigger players.
The best for Darling Downs was Brendan Isles.
In the Under-16 game Wide Bay won a closer contest 11.5 (71) to 9.5 (59) over Darling Downs.
Matthey Duffy kicked four goals for the Tigers and was solid throughout the game but the MVP award went to Mitchell Beecham, Jacob Martens was the best for Darling Downs.
Wide Bay faced on of the best teams in the state in the women’s game and went down gallantly 11.18 (84) to 0.0 (0).
Rose Robe was the best for Wide Bay and Mariah Pasfield was the MVP for Darling Downs.
