Rnd 2: Resilliant Tigers Men Overcome Tough Flames

By Connor Rice

Southern Tigers 101 | Norwood Flames 89

In what was seen as the game of the round, the Tigers and Flames squared off to see who would remain undefeated going into Round 3. Both teams started their 2016 campaigns strongly and both are offensively and defensively well equipped to make very deep post season runs.

Starting the game, Norwood were undeniably the hotter team. Outside shooting and dribble penetration meant the Flames were getting good looks and making use of them. As their hot shooting continued so did their score rise as they jumped out to an early 10 point lead.

By the half, the Tigers were in need of both an offensive and defensive change so making the move to pressure the ball and focus on inside presence proved successful. With Mitch Creek as their weapon, the Tigers absolutely thrive in transition. Thanks in no small part of the stellar defence of Sam Johns, who played almost the entire third and fourth quarters with no rest, the Tigers managed to get out and run, providing easier baskets than before.

Another huge contribution came from Centre, Jordan Dodman who was also influential in the Tigers victory. Dodman was too much inside the paint, with 24 points and through excellent defensive pressure.

The biggest star of the game was no doubt Mitch Creek who exploded for 40 points, 15 Rebounds and draining four massive triples. Creek’s great defence and massive boards created headaches for the Flames coaching staff and team defenders. Creek has started out the season on an absolute offensive hot streak and it will be interesting to see how teams try to guard him in the coming weeks given he is averaging over 35 points in just two games.

Matthew Lycett was huge for the Flames, scoring 28 points and draining four big three’s and is one of the league’s better scorers proving to be another big name on the scouting report for opposing defences.

A highly entertaining game was amplified by both the talent on the floor and the vocal Morphett Vale crowd. Both teams are incredibly strong on defence and can score at will. The Tigers, who will be looking to extend their dominance and the Flames, who will be looking to bounce back should both have strong showings in Round 3. One thing is for sure, if they continue to play at this level, it will be safe to say both teams will be in finals contention without a doubt.

Round 3: Saturday, 2 April at 8.15pm

Southern Tigers VS Eastern Mavericks at Morphett Vale

Norwood Flames VS Forestville Eagles at Wayville
