Rnd 11: Rockets give Warriors second consecutive blowout loss

By Kieren Vartuli

North Adelaide Rockets 77 | Woodville Warriors 42

The seventh seed Woodville Warriors were looking to take back-to-back wins against the fourth seed North Adelaide Rockets on Saturday night.

The visitors were off to a better start than the hosts but despite the inconsistent shooting from both sides, the Rockets started to warm up and they went on an 8-0 run to give them a 7-point buffer early. North Adelaide were also better defensively as they were forcing turnovers causing shifts in momentum. North Adelaide played better in transition compared to the visitors, proving its worth on the scoreboard. Woodville found themselves down 11 at the end of the first.

Despite North Adelaide controlling the game, the Warriors were slowly chipping away at the lead early in the second. This was not for long though as the Rockets turned up the heat and pushed their lead to 21-points by the end of the half. Woodville put up 13 points in the second quarter but they were turning the ball over a significant amount and this caused frustrations.

Coming out of the half, Tavarsha Scott added 4 straight points of her team high 15 for Woodville demonstrating both her and the clubs will to play harder despite the deficit. On the defensive end, Woodville also played much more physical defence although this resulted with North Adelaide in the bonus with over 3 minutes remaining in the third. North Adelaide not only played well defensively but also offensively as four players finished in double figures, led by Shannon Mckay and her 18-points.

As the final term began, the visiting Warriors were still struggling from the field but continued to play hard. A strong factor for the Rockets’ commanding win was their ability to protect the paint, which added to Woodville’s list of problems to be solved.

The long night for the icy Warriors came to an end leaving them with a deficit of 35-points as the closing siren sounded. This was their second consecutive blowout loss after falling to the Flames last week by 31.

Round 12: Saturday, 4 June at 6.30pm
