Rnd 20: Lions Women fail to keep up with mighty Sabres

By Jake Stoubos

Sturt Sabres 92 | Central Districts Lions 49

In a dominant display, Sturt have kept their season alive by defeating the Central Districts Lions by a solid 43 points at their home ground.

Central Districts got off to a slow start in the first quarter. Sturt scored the first few shots to fire off the period and managed to keep their opposition scoreless until the 5th minute by conceding a free throw. Eventually, the scoring levelled out and the Lions were able to sink a few baskets, though it was much later than the travelling side would have liked. Hannah Richards had a significant impact early on, scoring 8 points and creating a couple steals. Her red hot form saw her Sabres take the first quarter by 14 points.

The Lions were first to score in the second instantly settling some early nerves. The game was kept to a back and forth manner early on, seeing the visiting side score a couple back-to-back shots. However, just when it looked like the tide could possibly be turning, Jade Johnson made an exceptional offensive play from the defensive end, resulting in a successful three-point-shot. This allowed Sturt to get on another good run, creating some nice plays and ending the first half 42-21. The Sabres’ level of pressure late into the period was exceptional and allowed them to regain control of the match.

Much like the first quarter, Sturt were dominant early with their shooting and ball movement keeping their opposition relatively ineffective. Eventually, the Lions fired back with a few shots of their own by the way of some nice three pointers. Centrals knew that if they were to have any chance of narrowing down the margin they had to play some risky basketball. That’s exactly what happened when Abby Perry sunk a nice basket from a tough angle, however Sturt managed to match what was on display.  Unfortunately for Centrals, their hearty effort wasn’t enough as they still trailed by 37 points at the end of the third.

The final period was quite foul heavy. There were several pauses in play resulting in numerous free-throws being made by both sides. Despite being down so heavily late into the game, the Lions to their credit still kept fighting and showing off their courageous attitude. Eventually, the final whistle blew and the game ended with Sturt capturing the victory 92-49 in a hard fought match.

Jade Johnson was the top scorer on the night with 18 points, while Caroline Burgess made a solid contribution with 11 rebounds.

Despite the score line it was a tough match but the Sabres proved to be the better side on the night, managing to cope with everything thrown at them by the opposing Lions.
