Flames Four for Four

Eastern Mavericks (57) lost to Norwood Flames (114)

The new look Eastern Mavericks side hosted reigning premiers Norwood at their Mt Barker Rec Centre home on Saturday night. The Mavericks needed to be at their very best to unsettle the championship Flames team. It wasn’t a good start as they gave up 10 first quarter turnovers, followed by another 10 in the second. The costly result was a 32 point lead to the Flames at half time.

The early blowout allowed Norwood coach Simon Pritchard to share playing time around the full roster, no doubt looking to build experience through the whole team. However the relatively young and new Mavericks side can take solace in the fact that they were consistent across 4 quarters in assists, rebounds and, albeit at a much lower rate, scoring. Shannon Tarran continued to high score for Eastern with 13, while Emma Hooley put in a monster effort on the boards to collect 17 rebounds along with her 12 points.

Eastern cleaned up their ball control in the second half. They gave up just 9 turnovers for the rest of the game, but could not convert on the scoreboard. Meanwhile Jessica Good and the Flames had found their range from outside the line, shooting the 3-ball at 80 percent in the third term for 34 points. With 6 women scoring in double digits, Norwood strolled home to a 57 point win, doubling up Eastern’s tally to claim their third away win. Amy Lewis top scored, shooting over 50 percent from the field and knocking down all 9 of her free throw attempts for a total of 21.
