Sabres Make it Five on the Trot
Sturt Sabres (87) defeated Eastern Mavericks (58)
The Sabres women have continued their climb up the CABL ladder, claiming their fifth consecutive victory when they beat the Mavericks this weekend.
Once again defence was the theme of the night for the Sabres, limiting shot opportunities to create a formidable transition offence.
Keen to make their presence felt early, Eastern looked to assert themselves physically, not giving up any easy shots. However, their aggression quickly translated into fouls, committing twenty-four in the first three periods, where they were punished from the foul line.
Tamara Brine and Hannah Richards were prominent for the Sabres, combining for 34 points and 7 rebounds. However, once again the night belonged to Natalie Novosel, dominating both ends of the court with 19 points, 4 assists and 7 steals.
Sturt’s defensive pressure saw the Mavericks tire, allowing them to take a commanding 17 point lead into the main break.
Despite the best efforts of Eastern’s Samantha Lubcke (15 points, 7 rebounds) helping her side to win the final period, Sturt’s resilience saw them cruise to a comfortable 31 point victory.
