Rockets Launch into Grand Final

North Adelaide's women edged out Norwood on Saturday night, defeating the home club 81 to 72 in front of many ecstatic fans and spectators.

The preliminary final was categorised by high-tempo basketball. Each club looked to capitalise on fast break opportunities and were rampant in their offensive transition.

The match started in Norwood’s favour, as Kelsey Ireland knocked down numerous jump shots, much to the excitement of the Norwood fans. Their lead early in ball game was extended to as much as 7 points.

North Adelaide, to their credit, were able to cut the margin, with Jess Smart getting on the end of well structured offences and hitting multiple jump shots. Jamie-Lee Perris was also important for the club. Her raw skill and sheer hustle underneath the basket proved to be difficult to defend, as she contributed with successful post offences and resilient, tight defence.

Norwood had resurged and gained a comfortable lead of nine points mid way through the third quarter. In a match where each club traded baskets, such a margin appeared overwhelming. North Adelaide was forced to call a time out.

Following the break in play, the Rockets locked down in defence, even playing a zone at one stage. Although Norwood had many talented shooters, they were not able to knock down their open shots. North Adelaide’s explosive offence in comparison to the Flames’ conservative demeanour resulted in a twelve-point turn around in only five minutes of basketball. By the end of the third quarter, North Adelaide led 54 to 53.

In the final quarter North Adelaide simply had the fortitude and drive to win. Whilst simplistic, their determination was second to none as they trounced Norwood. Leadership from experienced players such as Jo Hill guided the Rockets to victory and a place in the 2014 Women’s Grand Final. Although a disappointing night for Simon Pritchard’s squad, players such as Jessica Good and Elizabeth Keane were robust in defeat, as they provided valuable options in offence and hustled back in defence.

On the back of two uplifting victories, North Adelaide will have every opportunity of winning the title. It will not however be an easy task, and their leaders such as Jo Hill and Jess Smart must once again step up to the plate.

It was a disappointing end to the season for Norwood. In spite of finishing minor premiers, Saturday night’s result demonstrates how the 2014 Women’s CABL has been tightly contested and fiercely competitive.
