Round Wrap: Norwood v South

By Mark Halliday

WOMEN:

The Norwood Flames have replicated their round one success against the South Adelaide Panthers, defeating them 96-67 and continuing their perfect start to the season.

Norwood once again took control of the game early despite some good defensive pressure from South. The Flames weren't phased by not getting the ball in the paint as they altered their attack and found their touch from mid-range.

Soon enough Norwood took their game inside and began to stretch their lead. On the other end of the floor, the Panthers started to feel the pressure as they missed a handful of close shots going up against the tough Norwood defence.

The Flames took a nine point lead at the end of the first quarter to a 20 point advantage with 2:40 left in the half with Jess Foley and Rebecca Duke leading the way for the home side with 10 points each.

The two teams traded baskets for a short period to begin the second half as South's offence got into gear. However, not content with matching their opponents, Norwood raised their game once more and built an insurmountable lead, peaking at 33 points during the fourth quarter.

Duke was a stand out performer. She stuffed the stat sheet with an incredible display on offence and defence. Duke finished with 15 points, six assists, five rebounds, four steals and four blocks.

Foley led all scorers with 22, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, Jess Good narrowly missed out on a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Ieva Nagy top-scored for the Panthers with 21 points including 3-for-3 from three point land. Madeline Cunningham and Mollie McKendrick finished with 19 and 17 points, respectively, but unfortunately for South, found their shooting touch much too late in the contest.

MEN:

A crucial run in the fourth quarter gave the Norwood Flames the edge in a tight contest as they defeated the South Adelaide Panthers 98-87.

Andrew Webber (23 points, seven assists) was on fire to start the final quarter, connecting on three triples and handing Norwood a decisive advantage late in the game.

South had done a good job during the third quarter to get as close as four points entering the final 10 minutes after being down by as many as 13 during that period.

Consecutive turnovers by the Flames had allowed the Panthers to bring themselves closer as Jeremy Read (17 points), Jordan Robertson (14 points, eight rebounds) and Philip Brown (five points, seven rebounds) all contributed in South's 10-4 run to close the third.

However, the Flames had stepped up their defensive efforts and limited the Panthers to just one point during Webber's three point barrage. The Panthers also lost Jeremy Smith (nine points, six rebounds) early in the fourth as he picked up his fifth foul, South evidently missing his hustle and energy for the remainder of the game.

Matt Lycett, always attacking, got involved, scoring eight of his game-high 26 points in the fourth. Jack Jennings (14 points, 11 rebounds), Matthew Long (10 points, eight rebounds) and Ian O'Boyle (nine points) all added to Norwood's pivotal 27-10 run and the Flames enjoyed a 21 point lead with 2:40 left to play.

Ryan Gardner led the Panthers with 24 points on 4-of-6 three point shooting and gave the visitors a small lead in the second when he made his third triple of the quarter. However, Gardner did the bulk of his scoring in the first half and wasn't enough to hold back the dominant Flames on their home court.
