Rnd 1: Sabres Women secure victory over Panthers

The Sturt Sabres have kicked off their season with a flying start, defeating the South Adelaide Panthers in a convincing 78-55 win at Marion Stadium on Friday.
Sturt lead the pace of the match with smart ball possession and swift movement which gave them early buckets. Anne Hatchard scored two 3-pointers within the early minutes of the game giving the Sabres early scoreboard pressure.
By the end of the first, Sturt were already thirteen points in front however the panthers showed more determination in the second through better offensive pressure and finding more scoring opportunities.
The second half was slightly more competitive with South gaining more control of the ball but Sturt’s capitalisation of free throws and early dominance paid off, with the Sabre’s taking a 63-43 lead in the third and closing the match in the fourth by 23 points.
Despite the defeat, Ieva Nagy had a strong game as the overall lead scorer with 26 points for the panthers.
Sturt’s Danni Angley entered double digit territory with 10 rebounds and 6 assists, while Jade Johnson, Hannah Richards and Anne Hatchard all scored 16 points each.
In the end Sturt walked away with a major win against South Adelaide in the opening round of the 2016 Premier league.
