Rnd 1: Tigers Women Secure Blowout Win

By Connor Rice

Southern Tigers 101 | Central District Lions 43

The Southern Tigers and Central Districts Lions matched up in the first game of the 2016 Women’s Premier League. It was clear the Lions were overmatched from the start with the Tigers quickly jumping out to an early lead and dominating on both ends of the floor.

To their advantage, the Tigers opted for a ‘small ball’ style lineup utilising MAC Adelaide Lightning player, Mollie McKendrick at the 5 spot. The Tigers then had the ability to push the ball in transition, be versatile defensively and initiate very early offensive sets before the Lions had a chance to match up.

Defense was also another major focus for the Tigers with it clear from the beginning of they wanted to pressure the ball with a full court press. The Tigers managed to make it incredibly difficult on Lions ball handlers as well as get easy turnovers and points in transition, with 34 of the Tigers 101 points off turnovers alone.

Unfortunately for the Lions who struggled to find good looks or run their offence all night, the Tigers just seemed to be good in all aspects of the game.

Massive performances from Mollie McKendrick who poured in a massive 27 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, looking to be everywhere in the low post and mid range. A fantastic outside performance from Ta’Rea Cunnigan saw her score 27 points and go 3-4 from beyond the arc and it proved too much for the Lions, as the Tigers ran away victorious 101-43 in a dominant home performance.

The Tigers seem to be in good stead going forward in the 2016 Premier League with a great mix of offence and defence.

Round 2: Friday, 18 March at 6.30pm

Central Districts Lions VS Sturt Sabres at Pasadena
