Rnd 21: Sabres Men impressive in 3rd place battle

By Connor Rice

Sturt Sabres 93 | Forestville Eagles 64

Two teams, 3rd and 4th place, both with 14 and 6 records came into Pasadena looking to lock up the final 3rd seed going into the finals. The Sabres and Eagles matched up in what was always shaping up to be a highly competitive affair, however the result on Saturday was sadly the total opposite.

From the outset the Sabres looked razor focused, and ready to play. The usual suspects of Daniel Johnson, Isaac White and the rest began getting easy looks inside and playing stifling defence. Despite the talent of the Eagles, it seemed they were simply over played at every possession as the Sabres managed to get really, whatever shot they wanted.

Unfortunately for the Eagles they really couldn’t get any production from their unit outside key star Guard Adam Doyle. Finishing with 17 points, he was a rare bright spot in trying to get the Eagles back into the game but it just was too much as the Sabres ran over them at every major break. Getting out in transition, making outside shots and passing the ball, the Sabres put on a clinic against what should have been a much closer Eagles unit.

Stars for the Sabres Isaac White (23points/75% FG) and Daniel Johnson (22points/70% FG) really lead the way for the Sabres and set the pace as to what the game would entail. The tandem has over recent weeks been really strong for the Sabres and the inclusion of key big DJ has really filled a front court void for the Sabres. It is quite a luxury having two players, who are almost a guarantee for strong games week in and out. As well some scoring off the bench for Hamish Burns and some big clutch rebounds for young guns Jacob Rigoni and Josiah Lee late game really put the nail in the Eagles coffin.

Now with the 3rd place seed locked up after the big win, the Sabres will be looking to maintain this outstanding offense going up against the league’s elite. The Eagles on the other hand will need to go back to the drawing board in finding a way to get some scoring across the board especially in the tougher finals defense.
