2014 Senior Secondary School Finals

Napier Boys and Girls Win Hawkes Bay Basketball Senior Secondary School 1st Division Titles

Close to 100 teams have battled for the past 12 weeks to gain a place in the finals of the Hawkes Bay Basketball Secondary School competitions.

The Senior finals were hosted at Pettigrew Green Arena last Friday Night in front of 500 spectators involving senior teams in the senior First, Second and Third Division finals.

At the end of the evening Kimiora Poi (Napier Girls High School) was named the 2014 Girls Most Valuable Player and Wilfred Dickson (Napier Boys High School) the Secondary School Boys Most Valuable Player.

Napier Boys High School and Girls High overcame their Hastings rivals in close matches to win the 1st Division titles

Napier Girls High School were slight favourites for their game against Hasting Girls High winning both their round robin games by 5 points. It was expected to be a battle royal between the Napier’s Kimiora Poi and Hastings point guard Aaliyah Ah Koing and so it proved to be with both scoring 24 points. However it was Napier’s greater depth and defensive intensity that saw them the winners by 89 to 73.

HGHS showed their intention early moving to a 5 point 17 to 12 lead at the end of the first quarter based on sound great team play and hard offensive rebounding. In the second quarter NGHS upped their defensive intensity keeping the Hastings team to only 7 points while scoring 15 mainly from steals. Napier’s half time lead of 27 to 24 featured 16 points from Kimi Poi and 11 rebounds by Laina Samia.

In the second half Napier’s started to dominate the match through their greater player depth with senior Demi Forshaw and juniors Mahia Isherwood and Kresna Crouch scoring freely. Napier easily won the third quarter by 32 by 23 and then the game by 89 to 73.

For Hastings Aaliyah Ah Koing with 24 points, Kathleen Tuaputa Nahora 17 points and Anecia Wilkie 16 points were the main scorers while for Napier Kimiora Poi had 24 points, 11 steals and 10 rebounds, Demi Forshaw 18 points, and Mahia Isherwood and Kresna Crouch 14 points each.

Hastings Boys High School was expected to be too strong for Napier Boys High School despite missing two players for the 1st division boys final. They had comfortably won their two round robin games and games at the super 8 competition.

Napier however had other ideas starting strongly with pressure defence and a running offence to lead the first quarter by 25 to 7.

Hastings lead by Harris Solomon battled strongly for the rest of the game winning the next two quarters and getting to within 5 points at the end of the 3rd quarter.

In the final quarter Hasting’s could not knock down their outside shots at key times and this lead to frustration and a series of technical fouls awarded against the team. Napier’s George Kalliantasis made the 6 shots from the technicals and a further 5 free throws in the final quarter to secure the game 71 to 64.

For Napier BHS George Kalliantasis scored 19 points, Wilfred Dickson 16 and Jacob Cowan 15 points. For Hastings BHS Harrison Solomon lead all scorers with 24 points.
