WELCOME HOME SHARON AND ANNA!
All the teams will be glad to see you back.
By all reports Sharon will have to rest up a day or two after her hectic 12 day Promotional rewards trip she won with busy days everyday including four each in LA, Vegas and San Francisco. Well done Sharon
SCHOOL PREMIERSHIPS (South Islands) commenced around the mainland with the Juniors SS in Dunedin which started on Saturday while the A Level for smaller schools (less than 600 pupils) also starts in Dunedin this Wednesday while the main teams head to Nelson for the AA Secondary School Zone 4 Premierships.
There are a total of 88 SI teams in action, a credit to the time and energy put into the schools around the mainland.
Nine boys’ junior teams from Christchurch have travelled to Dunedin with Rangiora, Cashmere and Shirley Boys all through to Monday’s main quarter-finals.
Rangiora New Life school (Boys and Girls) and the Hornby Boys will venture south for the A Secondary school Premierships starting on Wednesday.
14 of the 22 boys and 7 out of the 19 girls entries from Christchurch are about to head to Nelson for the Main AA Premierships which will be played in the refurbished 6 court Saxton stadium after severe flooding damaged the courts and the Jack Robbins stadium down the road at Stoke.
St Bedes, Burnside, Shirley Boys are in Boys Pool A, Cashmere is in Pool B, Middleton GG, Rangiora and Christs Coll are in Pool C while Lincoln, Boys High, St Thomas and Linwood Colleges form Pool D.
The Secondary school Nationals will be held in Palmerston North September 29 to October 2nd with six SI teams qualifying from the Southern Zone 4 Premierships where there are 24 boys and 24 Girls entries qualified for the AA Championships and a smaller number for the A level championships.
All told nationwide there are some 232 teams entered around the country in the three tournaments played over the four Zones.
Last year ChCh Girls High led by our own Tessa Boagni and backed up by some enthusiastic play from other Canterbury reps carried off the National championships while Rangiora High girls also finished well up in 10th place.
After a strong start Lincoln high finished off the pace in 19th place, Boys High (20th) and Middleton Grange (21st) and Canterbury wishes all the teams best of luck this year

Pioneer Pacers maintained its unbeaten status in the Championship section of the Men’s Premier grade club basketball in Cowles stadium on Saturday but it took a heroic 23 points from its inspirational leader, Canterbury Ram Marty Davison, to turn the game around in the second half against a very strong challenge from the long term defending champion Atami. Pioneer edged away in the closing moments to win 80-69, a margin that did not reflect the intensity of the match.
Lincoln University continued its improved efforts with play-offs looming but had to pull out all stops to force extra-time against University, tying the game at 84-84 before sneaking home 98-95 in the closing moments of the over-time period.
Improved teamwork from Checkers saw it grab second placing behind Pioneer with a sound 70-47 over Wolverines, a team struggling to maintain a fit side.
Gators over-powered North Canterbury 82-54 in the other game.
This leaves North Canterbury with little chance of a win this season as it faces Pioneer in this Saturday’s 1 v 8 Quarter-final, Checkers, the 2011 and 2012 champion, matches up again with Wolverines in the 2 v 7 Qtr and Gators and University clash in the 3 v 6 Qtr. Atami, which has made 12 appearance in 13 finals since 2001 (winning eight titles), faces the stronger Lincoln University, a side that beat it 64-67 in the championship round in the tight 4 v 5 Qtr final match-up and may herald the end of a long and deserving dynastay by a very proud team.
Marty drives Pioneer to a huge second half comeback to beat Atami 80-69
Atami with the Howell brothers getting around the boards took control of the game in the first half establishing a 22-15 first-quarter lead and maintained it at 38-33 by the turn around.
Just before the break Marty took control of the situation to lift his side to greater effort, setting the moves, passing off with deceptive ease while landing successive triple pointers before the break.
Joel Hart had made a welcome return from injury and made many long penetrating runs but the Pioneer defence shut him down. Oli Davies for Pioneer began to find chinks in the Atami defence and with support from Davison and free ranging Dan Pau’u Pioneer levelled the game 50-50 by the third break.
After that our Marty came alive. Stealing the ball, slotting three more 3’s in a row and adding some rebounds and several more assists to keep Pioneer on a roll. Pau’u responded to add 8 points and Davies 16 while Ritchie was restricted to 15 points, Scot and Rusty shut out with just 10 points to their name.
University runs out of wind with Lincoln prevailing 98-95 in extra-time.
University started strongly through the efforts of Nathan Campbell while his brother Matt set the play and ran the moves as University moved ahead 20-15 by the end of the first quarter and out to 44-28 by half-time. Nick Erwood (24 pts) led the Lincoln come-back in the second quarter with a variety of inside and outside shots but Willem Tolhoek and Brent Fisher kept the Canterbury students score turning over, ahead 67-57 at the third break. Lincoln’s Aled Jones and James Levings caused havoc among the University defence. James Cawthorn plundered the boards from long-range as the passes came thick and fast to the outside allowing Lincoln to outpoint Canterbury University 27-17 in the fourth to tie the game 84-84 and force extra-time. Cawthorn and Sam Smith continue to apply pressure for Lincoln in the extra time, Xavier Shaw lifted his work rate with strong rebounding while Canterbury Ram Brent Fisher (31 pts) continued to keep University in touch as Lincoln edged ahead to win 98-95.
Checkers grabs second as Ethan leads them to a 70-47 victory over Wolverines.
The elusive Nat Connell led the early challenge by Checkers expanding a 19-14 first-quarter lead to 42-21 by the turn around. Rusbatch showed his all-round skills as he rebounded the boards and drove through lack-lustre defence while notching 20 points. Checekers piled on the points in the second spell through slackening Wolverines defence, outpointing Wolverines 23-7 to extend the lead to 42-21 by the next break. Former Ram and Cougar, Lionel Hopgood (13) still finding his court skills after a prolonged injury break found confidence to drive the Checkers defence giving Wolverines valuable points in the third period and teenager Taylor Britt splashed in some late baskets to compile a handy 17 points but Checkers had too much depth and determination with Bede Marsters, Pip Johnston and Tyson Silberry adding to the tally.
North Canterbury’s bleak season continued as it was beaten 82-54
Jordan Duggan and Jozef Knottenbelt led a strong challenge for Gators, drawing a session of early fouls putting North Canterbury on the back-foot, pushing Gators to a 24-10 lead at quarter-time and maintained a 40-23 lead by half-time. Knottenbelt continued his hard work about the boards for gators while tight team defence restricted North Canterbury’s Lawson Morris-Whyte to just five points and four quick fouls saw him side-lined for a period of time.
North Canterbury lifted its efforts in the second spell restricting Gators to a 40-23 lead but Canterbury Ram Inga Solofuti penetrated the defence in the ensuing third period with support from Jamin Thomas. North Canterbury’s coach Danny Wilson and Josh Thompson made some strong moves in the final quarter but could make little headway slumping to a 28 ppint loss.

In the final round of games for the Women’s Premier championship long term Champion University which has won seven out of the last eight Grand Finals was outplayed in the second half by the Patron’s trophy winner Lincoln University 63-57 after University lead the first half 34-28.
Minties fort off another strong challenge from Gators, forced into over-time, tied 44-44 after a strong fourth quarter from Gators. Anita Snowden wrapped up the game from the free throw line for Minties, ahead 49-48 as the struggle continued.
Bottom side Checkers had to default its game to Halswell with player number problems leaving Lincoln University top seed and direct into the semi’s on September 13th.
University, Halswell and Minties ended tied for second place with four wins and two losses each in the championship round. University having beaten the other two took second place and a match-up against Checkers, a game that also has now been defaulted by the luckless Checkers.
Halswell gained third spot after a win and a loss and now meets Pioneer in the 3v6 quarter this Saturday but Pioneer is devoid of three key players including Tessa Boagni and the Edmondson sisters off to volleyball in American colleges.
Minties and Gators clash again in the remaining 4 v 5 quarter with Gators also struggling to field a full team due to the lateness of the season and several injuries.
Results were:

Burnside overpowers Shirley 101-43
Burnside High warmed up for this week’s Secondary school Premierships (SI Qualifying) tournament at Nelson thumping Shirley High 101-43 in the 1 v8 Quarter-final. National Junior representative and Canterbury Ram Shou Nisbett is still not back to his best after returning from injury while Toby Gillooly has made a mighty impact around the boards with regular scores over 20 PPG. Tom Liu is starting to make his mark as the playmaker, benefiting form playing in the University U23 side. Ben Van Noorden who has transferred from the schools B side has also been making an impact in recent weeks with a solid 22 points last Saturday.
Cashmere High defeats Lincoln High 96-71 2 v7 Qtr.
Cashmere high under coach Ben Sheat is another side to perform well at Secondary school tournaments and has Taine Tikao (20) starting to shine, Sam Riley (27) recruited from Lincoln, a steadying influence and Sharn Lecky quick to slip his marker around the boards. Jesse Campbell appears to be on the injured list. Ben Bowie (24) and Karesse Lavery (16) have been Lincoln’s main contributors this season while Caleb Adlam added value with a 15 point contribution but that was not enough as Cashmere pulled away to win 96-71 after leading 46-32 at the break.
Boys High Black claimed the 3 v6 Qtr beating St Bedes 83-57
Josh Campbell (17) showed good skills as he led Boys High to a 24-20 lead and Jack Ansell used his height to dominate the boards as they moved to lead 39-30 at the turn around. The flood gates opened in the third quarter with Boys High Black scoring 24-9 to extend the lead to 63-39 and coasted home ahead 83-57. Lauchie Weston (17) and Connor McCrossin (14) fresh from their U23 game with North Canterbury led the scoring for St Bedes.
Rangiora claims 9th place
Rangiora High claimed 9th place, after being eliminated from the quarters by Papanui high, by overwhelming Christs College 97-33. James Bolten stepped up with a solid 22 points for Rangiora, strongly supported by a well-compiled 21 points form Travis Montgomery and 20 from Gus Janssen. It was a disappointing end to the club season for Christs College, a team that has made good improvement throughout the year and casting off the cellar dweller tag to record four win one loss record the last five games prioe to play-offs and only missed out on reaching the quarter-finals by a two point loss to Shirley in the last round Both teams ended with four wins and one loss, but Shirley went through because of its win over College.
The team was missing three of its guards for the 9th/10th spot with Rangiora due to a basketball clash at the weekend (Jnr SS), but they will meet again at the South Island tournament.
Middleton Grange v Gators deferred
The Middleton Grange and Gators clash for the 4th semi-final spot and a semi-final encounter against the unbeaten Burnside will be played on September 8th.

2010, 2013 Defending Champion Wolverines
The Phillipino side, new entrant Pilipinas Askais, continued its strong form in the Top 8 pool play with a 79-69 win over Checekers while Placemakers Wolves got back on track with a powerful 71-56 win over University. Atami, always the unknown quantity in the Division grade held off a strong challenge from Gators White to win 58-55 last Sunday.
If Pilipinas Askais is to make the semi’s on September 14th then it will have to beat the strong University side in the last pool game or keep its loss to under 7 points should Placemakers beat Checkers. The other interesting clash was defereed with defending champion Wolverines set to meet the vastly improved HSOB later this week before the final round of pool play this weekend..

2014 Defending Champion : CYA |

Halswell Red regained revenge for an upset loss to CYA in last year’s final by putting out the defending champion 46-41 last Wednesday, meaning that Halswell Red and Checkers will meet in the Grand final on the 10th . Both sides will clash in the last round robin game this Wednesday and will meet again the following week.
CYA gave away a 17-26 lead at half-time against the former champions and fort back well in the second spell through the efforts of Jane Lattimore but Kim Hammond was on fire for the Halswell girls with a well compiled 20 points.
In a close hard fort struggle University gave all it could but without the livewire Dets Goulding, away tobogganing down among the snow, the students struggled to score and Checkers cemented a finals berth pulling clear in the second to win 29-17.
Scorers were:
Top four: Halswell Red 46 (Kim Hammond 20, Gina Papahadjis 12) CYA 41 (Jane Lattimore 12),
Checkers 29 (Kylie Brettel 13) University 17. Grand Finalists Sept 10th: Halswell Red v Checkers.
Bottom three: Royals 44 (Denise Ryan 10, Chloe Rapson 10) Halswell Green 33 (Wendy Duggan 9). Bye: Pioneer Pacers.
