New Teams Bolster Men's Premier Competition

The Pioneer and North Canterbury clubs will compete in Canterbury premier men's basketball this season, boosting the number of teams to eight.

Many of the sides have gone through significant changes during the off-season and with the Canterbury Rams now back in the NBL, the first round for the Hoben Trophy will reveal how the championship section will develop later in the season.

The opening round of games get under way tomorrow at Cowles Stadium.

Defending champions, Atami, which has made 12 of the past 13 championship finals, winning eight of them, will have a competitive team again.

They have lost key players Sam Dobbs and former Ram, Paul McFarlin. The Howell brothers, Richie and Scott, along with Rusty Thompson will anchor the side backed up by emerging young talent.
