U15 Nationals

Under 15 National Basketball champs at Wellington

The future looks encouraging for our Under 15 boys team which finished fourth at their National championships. The U15 Boys team went through pool play unbeaten, despatching Southland 89-49, Hutt Valley 91-43 and Hawkes Bay 93-54. They looked good in the Quarter finals with a 81-68 win over Hibiscus Coast but were edged out of contention for the championship when they were narrowly beaten 85-78 by eventual champsion Palmerston North in the semi’s in overtime. The Canterbury boys were a bit intimidated initially by the size of Palmerston Nth, all over six foot and dunking, and got behind by as many as 21 before mounting a fantastic comeback to tie the game at 76 all on a Will Hollings jump shot. They had their chances in OT as well but a back breaking 3 from PN and a last second scor from a late dish-off sealed their fate.In the third place play-off aginst another huge team Auckland Counties Manakau the boys lost 76-90, but a proud effort from the Canterbury Boys.Shirley’s Isaiah Morris stood out for Canterbury along with Christ Colleges William Harrions with Morris making the Tournament team. Canterbury Country finished in 11th place, beating Auckland Counties 2  71-65

The Canterbury U15 Girls weren’t so lucky having been placed in the same pool as the mighty Auckland Counties team who weere20 points better than Waikato in the final and many more than that in most of their games. Canterbury beat Harbour B by 80 - 33 and then lost the key game for them vs Hawkes Bay by 75 - 79. This was close all the way with Canterbury holding an 8 point lead mid way through the fourth before losing to the run and gun style in the last minutes. This relegated them to the 9 - 16 tier where they beat Canterbury Country 65 - 51and were then beaten 85-50 by North Harbour A in the 9-12 Semi’s and gained 11th place when it soundly beat Canterbury Country again 77-33.

A big thank you to all the coaches, managers and supporters of these teams who I'm sure all agreee that we desparately need a stadium like Wellingtons here in Christchurch.
