McDonald's Thompson and Whelan Round 14 Recap

The regular season has wrapped up now for all grades in the Canterbury High School competitions, with our Semi-Finalists for the McDonald’s Thompson and Whelan Trophy competitions now found.

Christ’s College travelled to Cashmere, with the number one spot in their pool up for grabs. Both teams were without key performers, but Ben Sheat’s Cashmere team had the depth to deal with this more effectively, winning 105-90. Connor McLaughlin continued his extremely strong season with 37p 8r 6s, and had great games from teammates Ruben Stanley (26p 6r) and Mitch Mahon (16p 6r).

Boys’ High’s game, where the result was academic in terms of standings, saw them take care of St. Bede’s 101-69, and will now go to play Cashmere next week. Quinn Clinton’s passing vision was on full display (20p 12a 4b), while Jack Ansell (19p 9r), Ben Harris (13p) and Jack Lang (10p) all happy to have their Point Guard back in the fold. Brodie Fransen managed 27p, but the rest of his teammates struggled to score, as nobody else managed more than seven points.

Burnside also had a tune-up game, knowing they would have the loser of Cashmere and Christ’s visit next week regardless, but still managed to win 75-51 over Ashburton, even with Toby Gillooly unavailable. Cameron Malone (17p 6s) took full advantage of the extra game time, with John Quitiong (13p), Liam Reekie (11p) and Simon Lafaele (10p 7r) also looking good.

Papanui high had motivation to prove my weekly picks wrong, with St. Thomas being the unfortunate recipient of Carl Isitt’s 47 points, in a 104-90 win. Xavier Ngaata (26p), Tane Wallace (16p), Izaac Beever (15p 5a), and Jacob Sue (11p) played well, but ultimately weren’t able to defend their house. Middleton Granges boys went down to the visitors from Rangiora 68-63, despite another gigantic 20:20 from Angus McWilliam (28p 21r), and 12 points from Dan O’Brien. Ben Hall scored 23p for Rangiora in their win, as both teams now sit and wait until the BBNZ Premierships.

In the Whelan competition, Burnside upset group leader Rangi Ruru 88-69, who were without Esra McGoldrick due to sickness, and already content in the knowledge they had locked up a home semi. Christchurch Girls’ also gained homecourt for their semi-final game, taking care of St. Andrew’s 87-55. Rangiora managed to hold off a tough Middleton Grange team to book the final playoff berth, 55-49. Megan Ellis (Middleton) led all scorers with 21, with Lucy Brown adding 19. Rangiora’s Rachael Parkinson and Charlotte Whittaker both scored 12p, while Renee Tuhikarama added 11. In the bottom four section, Ellesemere’s Paris Nurse scored 41, as her team won 80-40 over Lincoln.

It was Semi-final night in Division II of the Thompson Trophy, with Hillmorton and Linwood playing in an extremely entertaining game which ended up in Hillmorton’s favour 74-60. Ihaia Kendrew (22p 8r) and Joshua Nickel (21p 10r) led the home team, with Shakani Tupuailei (27p 7r) and Tristen Read (10p 8r 4b) standing out for the Linwood College team, who were absent the Sanchez brothers. St. Andrew’s won their matchup against Lincoln convincingly, 88-49, and will meet Hillmorton at 4:30pm on August the 24th.
