GBL Winter Championship Division 1 Wrap- Round 1

SHARKS have started the defence of their GBL Winter Chammpionship Division 1 women’s title on the right note, beating Try Boys 76-56 at the Arena on Tuesday night.

The reigning champions opened proceedings with a 19-11 first quarter and were never headed.

Guard Georgia Varley impressed with 24 points and was well supported Jessie Christiaans (17 points), Alex Duck (16) and Renee Lane.

Veteran big Sarah De Grandi and teenage guard led the Bears with 14 points apiece.

Caitlin Shadbolt proved the difference in Lara’s 62-56 victory over YMCA.

The SEABL Lady Supercat was unstoppable on her way to 37 points, with Nat Wallace (14 points) the only other Giant to score in double figures.

Maddy McMahon (nee’ Taylor) ensured Y was competitive, finishing with 25 points, while veteran duo Vicki King (13 points) and Charmaine Ferguson (12) also busy.

An impressive display of outside shooting from Lauren Bellagante guided Rovers to a 57-43 result against Pivot City.

The Supercats’ Victorian Youth Championship Women’s captain knocked down six three-point attempts on her way to 20 points, continuing on from her good form at VYC level.

Guard Olivia Cameron was best for Pivot with 19 points.

Vytis has claimed the scalp of reigning Winter champions Pivot City to open the new men’s GBL season.

The Knights produced an impressive defensive effort in the 48-40 victory, holding the Pivotonians to just 24 in the opening three periods.

Romas Liebich impressed with 16 points for Vytis, while Andy Przybylkiewicz had 10.

Jason Reardon (11 points) was the only Pivot player in double figures.

A vintage performance from Paul Hutchison helped Try Boys open its season with a 55-50 win over Sharks.

The star shooter had 20 points, which included four three’s.

Big man Shane Hunter paced Sharks’ scoring with 18 points, James Deocampo and Arnaud Lenferna both finished with 10.

Lara had too much depth for YMCA in a 70-61 victory.

SEABL Supercats big man Ash Cannan proved too tough to handle for Y, leading the Giants with 29 points.

Lewis Varley kept Y competitive with 17 points.
