GBL Winter Championship Division 1 Wrap- Round 16

Basketball Geelong

Christian College has had to fight off a final quarter comeback from Vytis to remain in second place on the Geelong Basketball League Winter Championship men’s ladder with three rounds remaining.

The Eagles appeared headed for a comfortable victory when they led 67-50 at three-quarter time.

However, the Knights, who needed a win to keep their fading finals hopes alive, outscored Christian College 27-13, to fall just three points short, 80-77.

A fast start from Pivot City laid the foundation for a 61-53 win over Sharks.

The Pivotonians opened the contest with an 18-8 first quarter and were never seriously threatened as the win locked away the all but secured the reigning champions the minor premiership.

Seamus Hants and Dane Bow both had 19 points for Sharks, who now to remain unbeaten over the final three rounds, and have results go their way, to sneak into the top four.

Lara had too much depth and experience as its handed Try Boys a 100-56 hiding.

The 44-point win gained the Giants some handy percentage as they remain in the battle with Christian College and YMCA for second spot.

Six Lara players scored in double figures, led by 24 points from Ash Cannan and Mikey Lesic’s 22.

Teenage duo Matt Johns (15 points) and Mitch Norton (12) battled hard for the Bears.

Rovers kept alive its hopes of snatching a top-two finish on the women’s Winter Championship ladder with a tight 47-43 win over fellow finals contender Pivot City.

Trailing by four points at three-quarter time, Rovers ended the contest with an 18-10 burst to join Pivot on eight wins.

Shayna Poto continued her good form for Pivot City with 19 points.

The reigning champions held a two-point lead at quarter time, but had effectively ended the game as a contest by half time.

Backcourt duo Alex Duck and Georgia Varley both had 29 points for Sharks, while Becky Lane contributed 20.

Young shooter Kendyl Collins continued her good run of form with 32 points in a losing effort from the Bears.
