Popular local Shingleback Jim “Judd” /“Torpedo” Hinton is in a race against time to line up for NSW 60’s on Friday against Tassie after straining a Hamstring against Queensland on Wednesday.
According to the man himself, Hinton was on fire on Sunday against VIC Country in Launceston in a dashing performance off half back, before the Coach seeing his talent moved him into the middle for the second half.
After two days on the turps Hinton, after a bus ride to Hobart, was straight in the middle against Queensland and according to former local Graham Whitford (pictured alongside Hinton) was doing a great job of annoying everyone with his “nasty streak”, scaring the banana benders. Footy for Fun for Hinton is whacking a few …and then saying sorry!
At the start of the last quarter Hinton dashed out of the middle onto his left, pumping them little stumps, until “PING” went the left hammy! For the first time in his 45 year career Hinton was carried off to a rousing reception and pats on the back from teammates 10 years older! In the background a voice (Julie Hinton) could be heard saying “I told you that you were too old!”
Hinton (his kit pictured) was quickly on the phone to Shingleback Head Trainer Garry Sandy who after laughing for 5 minutes suggested the ICE principal and some earplugs to block out the wife’s advice!
Hamstrings take 21 days with the best of treatment for a fit AFL footballer but for Hinton with State pride on the line he was off for Acupuncture treatment on Thursday. Rest assured he will be on the park Friday having a dip against the Tassie boys. The Coach has suggested he just play full forward and do a Peter Hudson impersonation on the Torpedo!
Whitford was a gun Junior for the NFC debuting on the same day as Mark Perry in the early 70’s. He then ventured to WA where he kicked a 100 in a year before doing the same on arrival in Tasmania.
The 2015 Masters Carnival concludes on Saturday with the finals followed by the Awards night where the 700 plus players all gather to compare injuries. Hinton may well make the All Australian injured team. At the conclusion of the night the venue for 2016 will be announced and hopefully its Northern Australia again so the Shinglebacks can all come out from behind a rock and bask in the glory of Masters Football.
