Eight Boomers Nominated for Big V Awards

In recognition of some fabulous performances from our Big V teams over the 2014 season, there have been eight Boomers players and coaches nominated for 2014 Big V Awards. The winners of these awards will be announced at the Big V Awards dinner at Eithad Stadium on Saturday 20th September.

Here's a brief run down on all our nominees for the Big V awards.

Thad Varmall: All-Star Guard nominee, MVP nominee

Thad joined our Senior Championship mens team this season, having played his College ball in the US at York College. Thad was a standout performer over the season, playing all 25 games and averaging 24.6 points, 6.4 boards and 2.3 assists per game.

Liam Norton: All-Star Guard nominee

Not far behind Thad was Liam Norton, also having a standout season in his first season at Boomerland. Liam also played all 25 games for 19.2 points, 4.3 boards and 3.3 assists per game. Together with Thad, this duo was certainly one of the best back courts in the competition.

Funda Nakkasoglu: All-Star guard nominee, MVP nominee

Funda had another stellar year for our Championship Women, leading the team to the cusp of a finals appearance in what was a difficult season for the girls. Funda averaged 20.2 points, 4.3 boards and 2.3 assists in an outstanding season and is a deserved nominee for two awards. With Funda now off to US college at Utah State, this leaves a big hole to fill at point guard for the next few years ...

Brodie Theodore: Youth Player of the year nominee

Young gun Brodie Theodore has had some ups and downs over the last year or two with injury, but has been rewarded for effort with her youth player nomination. Brodie played limited minutes for our Championship Women in short bursts on court this season, but still averaged 6.1 points and 2.4 boards per game - we sure hope Brodie is fit and well next season to step up and take a bigger role in the team.

Richard Oryem: Rookie of the year nominee

Richard was also a new face in our Youth Men's team for 2014, coming across to the Boomers from Dandenong. While the boys just missed out on a finals berth, Richard certainly showed his potential, playing 21 games for 13.8 points, 4.1 boards and 1.8 assists per game. Sure hope to see Richard back at Boomerland for Big V 2015.

Sam Moodie: Rookie of the year nominee

Our Youth Champ girls were the standout performers of the season, just going down to Knox in the Grand Final. Probably the feature of this team was the even contribution across the whole roster, but Sam was still a derserved nominee for rookie of the year honours. Sam played all 25 games for 8.4 points, 9 boards and 1.8 assists per game. Sam is now off to Junior College in the US, we may see Sam back on court for the back end of next season.

Matt Papps: Coach of the year nominee

In a tough year for our Championship Women with a roster that had to be topped up with youth players for most games, Matt Papps coached an under manned (under personned ?) team to the brink of a finals appearance, only missing out with a last round loss to Waverley. Matt's ability to get the most out of every player on court was recognised with his coach of the year nomination.

Gary Fox: Coach of the year nominee

Well this one was pretty much a no brainer ... in his first year as our Youth Championship women's coach, Gary led our young team all the way to the Grand Final ... the improvement of the team over the season was significant and Gary's nomination recognises his fantastic ability as a development coach.

Congratulations to all our Boomer nominees for the 2014 Big V Awards - we look forward to hearing the final award results at the Big V Awards dinner on 20th September.
