Redevelopment: A Great New Home for Bulleen Boomers!

Bulleen Boomers are very pleased to advise that today, the Planning Minister and candidate for the local State Legislative Assembly seat of Bulleen, the Hon. Matthew Guy and Sports Minister, the Hon. Damien Drum, together with the Mayor Cr Jim Grivokostopoulos and Joe Carbone, CEO Manningham City Council, announced funding for a $1.3 million refurbishment of Sheahans Road, the home of the Bulleen Boomers.

The State Government have committed to providing $500,000, Manningham City Council has also generously committed $300,000 and Bulleen Boomers will contribute the remainder of the cost of the project.

Bulleen President, Derek Pangbourne said “this is a great day for the Club. Our 5,000+ members and the wider basketball community that utilise this venue almost every day of the year will benefit from the generosity of the State Government and Manningham City Council.

The redevelopment of the Stadium is not only for Bulleen Boomers members and the basketball community but for the Manningham community.  The complex will be ameeting place and community asset with modern and social amenity which all can be proud of and we are thrilled that the Manningham City Council has been so instrumental in this fantastic opportunity coming to fruition."

The project will redevelop the existing ¾ size court into a full size court while maintaining its multi-use functionality so we will have a 3 court stadium. The office space, club rooms, café, shop and amenities will be part of the refurbishment. We expect building to commence June 2015.

Sheahans Road Stadium has been the home of the Bulleen Boomers for more than 40 years. Bulleen is arguably one of the most successful clubs in Australia, developing players as young as 6 at the grass roots level, all the way through to winning countless state and national titles and developing talent that have gone on to play in the NBL and WNBL and represented their state and country. Bulleen has produced many Australian players, our most famous being the first Australian woman to play in the WNBA, Michele Timms.

Now rebranded as Melbourne Boomers, Bulleen has supported the Women’s National Basketball League team since the league began, providing a pathway for women to play at the highest level in their sport. The current Melbourne Boomers have an Australian Olympian and two other Australian Opals that recently won the bronze medal at the World Championships in Turkey.

All out of a two court, 40 year old stadium.

Mr Pangbourne said “we will be calling on our past and present Bulleen Boomers family to help us bring this great project to a reality through sponsorship, donations and assistance with fundraising. Many people have worked toward this day over the last 40 years and we will continue to work together to complete a successful project and a great facility for all of our Boomers and the wider community.”
