Big V Weekly Wrap Round 3

It was a mixed bag for our Big V Boomers in Round 3, with both women's teams picking up good wins, but our men's teams both going down.

Here a wrap of the weekend's games.

Youth Championship Women

A tough road trip for our Youth Women down to visit the Geelong Supercats. And while the young Geelong team are not highly rated this season, they pushed our girls right to the very end of the game before the Boomers prevailed 60 - 55.

Another good defensive effort by the girls, forcing the Supercats into 23 turnovers, but the shooting will still need to improve to challenge the top teams.

Another stellar effort from Emma Pearce to lead the way with 18 points and 7 boards, with Olivia West contributing 9 points.

A big home game coming up with week for our Youth Women against Diamond Valley.

Youth Championship Men

After a ripping 3 - 0 start to the season, this week was a big challenge for the boys against the highly rated Dandenong Rangers.

And while it wasn't a win, our Youth Men were gallant in defeat as they went down to the Rangers 67 - 73.

The boys dominated the boards against the Rangers, but the turnover count hurt as pretty much the two teams were evenly matched in the stats across the game.

Chris Nave had another great game with a big double double of 17 points and 15 points boards, while Ernst Kruger with 15 points is putting in some consistently strong games. Roger Oryem was also good with 13 points.

Another away game this Sunday for our Youth Men as they travel to Sandringham to take on the Sabres.

State Championship Women

A solid 65 - 53 win for our Champ Women against local rivals the Eltham Wildcats. The girls eased away in the second quarter with a number of steals by the back court combination of Whelan and Alison Drennan, then matched the Wildcats in the second half to secure the W.

And there's plenty of upside for the girls, as new US import Taylor Hall suited up having stepped of an aeroplane 24 hours earlier, but was still a contributor with 6 points and 9 boards. Watch out for Taylor over the coming weeks as she gets in some training time with the team.

For this game, the two livewires of Whelan and Drennan did the damage with 15 points each. Ali Drennan also grabbed 9 boards in a great game at both ends of the court.

Our Champ Women have the double header this week with the Youth girls in taking on Diamond Valley at home at EDSC.

State Championship Men

Well, sometimes the less said the better - after looking reasonably comfortable in the first half, the third quarter was a disaster as our Champ Men fell in a hole against the Hawthorn Magic. While for a moment or two in the last quarter it looked like a big comeback might be on the cards, the Magic continued to make big shots and the boys went down 74 - 78.

Brett Fennell led the way with 19 points and 6 boards, while Scott Cuffe worked hard for 18 points and 10 boards.

Time to move on to next week - our Champ Men visit the Sherbrooke Suns and will be hoping to get back on the winners list.
