Big V Weekly Wrap Round 11

Big V 300

A pretty good weekend for our Big V Boomers with 4 wins from 6 games played in Round 11.

Big double header weekends for both our Youth Championship teams, with our Youth Women nailing back to back wins, while our Youth Men split their games.

A tough and scrappy game for our Champ Women who just held out the Melbourne Tigers, while our Champ Men went down narrowly to the Diamond Valley Eagles.

Here's the weekly wrap.

Youth Championship Women

Not an especially challenging weekend for the girls, but they still had to get the job done. And get the job done they did, with two strong wins to keep their season rolling.

The Boomers were too strong for the Ringwood Hawks on Saturday night, winning 72 - 47. Emma Pearce again led the way with 20 points, while Dani Calvisi had 13 points and Kiera Rowe chipped in with 11 points. Overall a good all round team performance.

Backing up on Sunday, the girls shot out of the blocks with a 29 - 11 first quarter to effectively close out the game early against the Hawthorn Magic. The Magic fought it out, but the Boomers ran out comfortable 80 - 58 winners. Emma Pearce was again at the top of the sheet with 21 points, while Kara Tessari had 13 points and Bridget O'Neill grabbed a double double of 12 point and 10 boards.

A strong weekend for the girls and they jump to second on the table for now.

Youth Championship Men

Our Youth Men had the opportunity to consolidate recent patchy form and started well on Saturday night with a solid 73 - 59 win over the Keilor Thunder. In an even team performance, Roger Oryem and Jordan Little had 14 points each, while Evan Solakidis grabbed 13 points.

At home on Sunday, the Boomers were out to avenge last week's narrow loss to the Hawthorn Magic who are becoming a bit of a bogey team. And the boys were looking good at three quarter time with a 7 point lead and playing well - unfortunately it all went pear shaped in the last as the Boomers could not hold their shooting form and went down 64 - 71. Little was best with 14 points and 12 boards, Harry Fayle had 12 and Richard Oryem 11 points.

At a critical part of the season, the boys have lost consistency, alternating win then loss over the past 6 games. They are still well positioned for finals, but need to be able to close out the tight games.

State Championship Women

It was a tight and sometimes scrappy affair on Saturday night at EDSC as our Champ Women took on the Melbourne Tigers.

The Boomers looked in control for much of the first half, easing out to a near double digit lead on more than one occasion. Talyor Hall in particular was causing all sort of problems for the Tigers, scoring at will both in the paint and from the perimeter.

In the third quarter, the Tigers hit back as the Boomers shooting went cold and hit the lead mid way through the period. The girls steadied to regain a narrow lead at three quarter time, then just did enough to hold the lead through the last quarter before icing the game from the charity stripe to win 66 - 58.

Taylor Hall was the standout with 20 points and 6 boards, with support from Courtney Collins with 11 points.

The Boomers are clinging on to fifth position on the ladder, but have a tough run of away games over the next few weeks.

State Championship Men

Our Champ Men had the chance to grab another important away win against the struggling Diamond Valley Eagles.

This game pretty much went basket for basket for the entire 40 minutes, with neither team able to lead by more than a few points. Unfortunately, the boys just could not find the critical baskets and went down 69 - 75 in a narrow loss.

Liam Norton led the Boomers with 21 points, whlle Scotty Cuffe had a big double double of 19 points and a huge 18 boards.

A disappointing loss for our Champ Men who need a couple of big wins to get their season back on track.

It's mid season break over the long weekend next weekend for the Big V compeition - games resume  at EDSC on Saturday 13th June with a Youth Women/Champ Men double header.
